Sisyphe's Backspace is one of the simplest games I have played recently, but I was surprised by how effective it is. The entire experience revolves around a conversation between two friends and the simple act of using the Backspace key. That sounds almost too basic to work, but I liked how the mechanic turns hesitation itself into something I can interact with. There is almost no conventional gameplay here. Instead, I am presented with text and use Backspace to move the conversation forward. I found the simplicity strangely appropriate because the story is about things that are difficult to say. Every moment of hesitation feels connected to the subject of the conversation, so the one mechanic never feels completely arbitrary. The writing is easily the strongest part. The game focuses on love, uncertainty and the words people sometimes want to say but cannot bring themselves to express.
