*Starry Nights: Helix* presents itself as a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up that blends retro aesthetics with an anime-styled storyline, but the result is a game that feels more like an outline than a fully realized experience. Its opening moments set the tone immediately: a simple everyday scene involving a cancelled school day abruptly gives way to a surreal level filled with floating characters and dinosaurs. This jarring transition isn’t a one-off quirk but an early sign of the game’s narrative fragmentation. Throughout the adventure, cutscenes appear with stiff pacing and a translation that often borders on nonsensical, leaving character motivations unclear and emotional beats hollow. While the developers clearly aimed for a whimsical, dramatic tale involving multiple protagonists and their relationships, the lack of narrative cohesion or proper localization drains these moments of impact, turning what should be meaningful story segments into confusing interludes between levels. The core gameplay, though functional, feels rooted in the most basic elements of the shoot-’em-up formula without offering meaningful evolution or challenge. The player moves horizontally, fires continuou…

+ The artstyle is the best thing on this game - The character's movement, it's too fast - Too much visual effects - Unbalanced difficulty curve in stages (The difficulty spike from Stage 1 to Stage 2 is too much)

Starry Night: Helix is surely one of the most painful cases that I've gotten disappointed by a video game. The art is fantastic and I really dig the soundtrack. But the gameplay? I am so let down... The very first thing that feels very wrong is the character's movement speed. The main character simply moves way too fast; an issue that is not very visible at first, but starts to cause trouble as soon as you get to more difficult patterns, requiring you to keep holding the slow movement button. This especially becomes a problem in the bossfights as the game suddenly shifts from a very easy game with very easy patterns to a more challenging one. I also do believe there is something wrong with the hit point of your playable character. I noticed that in the aforementioned bossfight, the playable character was getting hit even though the projectiles barely missed her. I reckon either the hitbox of some projectiles or the character is bigger than what it looks like. Next, we have the usual problem of many shmup games: Visual clarity issues. The main character constantly shoots barrages of bright blue projectiles that take a large portion of the screen, effectively concealing the project…
