Sylvio 2

The first Sylvio game, while rough in execution, had a lot of potential and originality. Sylvio 2, on the other hand, feels fractured, lacks confidence in its design, and is oppressively controlling. Pros: + Unparrareled twisted feel of the game + Improved voice and visual recording manipulation gameplay + Great sound, music, and voice acting Neutral: * Story quality and its delivery Cons: - Visually boring and monotone game - Reduced gameplay elements - Goofy ending It wasn’t always supposed to be this way. If you play or look at the demo for the kickstarted version of Sylvio 2, it was supposed to be a natural evolution of the first game and a title that would offer something truly special to the horror games genre. But, the Kickstart failed and these hopes were dashed away, and you’ll feel that with every minute you spend playing this game. It is not all doom and gloom, however. I want to preface this by saying I entirely understand why this game has mixed reviews. It helps a lot better to go into this thinking of it as more of an interactive experience rather than a game. Gameplay wise, the main focal point is certainly the EVP investigation elements. Fast forwarding, rewinding, slow, combing through ghostly recordings to get enough evidence to continue on. However outside of that it's largely "Go to clearly marked point A, do the recording, Move on to point B, repeat until the area is clear, then move on to the next area and repeat the process all over again." Still, those EVP mechanics are some of the coolest game mechanics I've ever seen. Especially the video ones. What really shines for this game for me, what lodged this game into my brain, was the atmosphere. My god the atmosphere is phenomenal. Oppressive, bleak, distressing, yet peaceful. Creepy, sad, disturbing, harrowing even at times. Nothing that ever outright jumpscares you, nothing that ever shocks your system to a point of fight or flight, but it still seeps into you as you play. While I understand some of the critique, I still think this is a nice addition to the series, addressing both the needlessly expansive game world and a great deal of jank revolving around the potato gun by completely nixing it entirely. Do I miss the complete lack of puzzle solving? Sure, but it still maintains the wonderfully bizarre atmosphere of the original [i]Sylvio[/i], Maia reprises her role as Juliette, and personally, cool as the reel-to-reel deck was, I think the haunted audio spectrums and video analysis are decent enough novelties in their own right. The real gem, though, is traveling via the rusty trawler. An entire game where you explore a post-apocalypse of cosmic horrors by boat, decorated in occult artifacts—akin to the statues here—would be absolutely brilliant and I would quite frankly play the ♥♥♥♥ out of that if it existed. Definitely don't let the negative reviews scare you; if you enjoyed [i]Sylvio[/i], but wished it had been better structured, you're doing a disservice to yourself by skipping its sequel.

good game with interesting story and gameplay the system with listening and recording ghosts aswell as rewinding recordings and speeding them up to find words which will help u go to the next location and learn the story of the island u are on ,however there is a few gamebreaking bugs.A bug happend to me in location 7 where the glowing orb disappeared and i couldnt continue to play no matter how much i restared the game.Overall game is good but a few big updates are needed. 7/10

TLDR: If you enjoyed the first, you'll likely enjoy it. If you are new to the series, I think you will still like it (and should play the first game after this one). I had nothing but praise for the first Sylvio game... this one surpasses the original in some aspects, but falls short in others. Loved the return of the sound analysis, running the recordings forward and back, fast and slow. Even better, I loved have the sound wave pattern to look at while doing so, having a visual helped differentiate the sounds and helped me find bits I missed. The video analysis hits hard, spooky as heck and mesmerizing, if hard to make out (which is certainly the point and part of the scary charm). There are now markers that guide you through areas, showing where to record sounds, grab items, etc. This is a double edged blade; great to know you are heading the right way, good to know when you've completed an area, pointing out items you may miss. However, feels a bit hand-holdy when the first game kinda just threw you in, and you had to use clues and sound cues to figure out recording locations.
