"Synthalaxy" is a somewhat novel hybrid of puzzle game and shooter, and just because an idea is novel doesn't mean it's good. But the reason this failed is an incredibly lazy and shallow technical and visual presentation that makes the game both unpleasant to look at and unpleasant to play... so it's no surprise this was a complete failure on Steam. What do you do in the game? The idea is for you to think a little, the enemies have weak spots and you need to move and position carefully instead of just blasting away. Okay. But is it fun? Nope. The graphics here are particularly awful, so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam. Quite an accomplishment. It's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. I started out on a new pace of reviews over the weekday, and fate immediately deterred me with the illusion of a save file through locked stages. I played the first two worlds and decided to save the rest for later, yet when I returned I encountered a bug when starting the game from the stage select which would alt tab the game, triggering a consequent bug of permanently wiping the graphics. The game then morphed into a gauntlet of levels for which I could afford absolutely no distractions. Alas, after several attempts, I made it to the bonus stage of world four, and there I made my final mistake, leaving myself too fatigued to play the entire game again for the chance at a single level. The game is a unique palette of moods and events with a neon-skeletal "demo design" aesthetic. The basic "top-down shooter" style isn't often used as a Mind game except by older generations of stealth games, and although the mechanics of using enemies patterns and movements against them are more stripped back and binary, the intensity and fragility of "combat" is exactly the same. A fine game, good evolution in mechanics from beginning to end. Secretly a puzzle game masquerading as a twin stick shooter. Expert levels of frustration found in the bonus levels if you're into that.
