About The Gateway Trilogy

Gateway is an award-winning minimalist point & click puzzle adventure set in a desolate black void. The Gateway Trilogy includes remastered versions of the first two games – plus a never-before-seen third installment.

Gateway

Gateway has a deceptively simple premise: guide a character through a series of rooms, solve puzzles to progress. But underneath the stark presentation lurks hidden convolutions.

Gateway I & II

Gateway I & II were originally released as freeware back in 2006 and 2007. For the trilogy edition they have been completely remastered with enhancements to sound, gameplay and visuals – along with the addition of a never-before-seen third installment.

If you've never played the previous Gateway games, this is by far the best way to experience them. If you've already played them, don't miss the chance to experience them again in this spruced up and expanded edition.

Gateway III

Gateway III – the lengthiest installment in the series by far – is a completely new addition that loosely builds upon the previous games in surprising and discomforting ways.

Key Features

 • Trilogy: Enjoy an entirely new part of the quietly unsettling Gateway series
 • Remastered: Appreciate the reworked music, gameplay and visuals
 • Story: Experience strange and ambiguous stories
 • Puzzles: Solve tricky puzzles in an abstract minimalist void
 • Hard mode: Tackle 40 extra devious puzzles if you feel up for the challenge
 • Commentary: Listen to the creator outline the choices behind the game's design

✦ AI summary

Players praise the first two Gateway games as atmospheric, minimalist point-and-click adventures with clever puzzles and an eerie, intriguing sense of mystery, though some feel the added dialogue in the paid versions doesn't improve the experience. However, Gateway 3 is notably divisive—while fans of tile puzzles enjoy it, many find it disappointingly short, too puzzle-focused, and confusing in its narrative payoff, with some feeling the series peaked earlier. Technical issues like lag after extended play sessions are also mentioned, though saving and restarting resolves them.

Really loved playing the first two games back in the day and I'm glad they're now part of a full release! Third game is a mixed bag as it focuses specifically on puzzle-solving as its main thing with the storytelling taking more of a backseat (and will absolutely not answer any questions you might have had regarding the first two games) but I think it's interesting in its own way, even if I think some of its challenges are quite annoying and I think the second game did a much better job at using its puzzles as part of the storytelling. Game also comes with dev commentary for the first two games and as someone who really enjoyed playing those I also really enjoyed learning more about their development!
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆:

For the sake of this being a trilogy, I will split this section of the review into 3 sections, for each of the games included. However, I will start with this: Preserving flash games is very important. I am glad I finally had a chance to replay this childhood classic along with a new chapter. The fact that Cockroach Inc. and The Sleeping Machine have helped to preserve the legacy of Anders Gustafsson and Erik Zaring with "The Gateway Trilogy" and "The Dream Machine" is truly amazing. This collection also comes with commentary on its creation and its design philosophy which is a treat. Now let's start with
Gateway I (2006)

The start in a series of unique point-and-click puzzle games. It laid the foundation of what was to come. Puzzles start off with item interactions before introducing complex interactions such as floor tiles, pattern matching, environmental interactions, and numbers. Nothing too crazy, but it jogs the brain and doesn't take too long to complete while laying the foundation for the second game,
Gateway II (2007)

[/hr…

Quirky one-of-its kind game. Minimalist graphics, simple plot. Enjoyed the creepy/mysterious music, it went well with some puzzle scenes. Ah, the puzzles, not bad in normal mode. My puzzle fav is still part II. Part III was kinda trippy-- Ending made me go .. "What just happened?". And it did lag after continuously playing for 4 hours. Just a matter of saving the game, quitting & coming back to it. I also believe it depends on your PC specs? Anyway, I'd recommend this if you want to enjoy some simple mind-solving games with some background story to keep ya a little bit entertained.

I enjoyed it but the third game was just too short, and was mostly tile puzzle which maybe added to the robotic, gradual restart of the sleeper? Ended when it really became interesting. I wonder if it will have some sort of sequel. From what i understand the player character goes backwards in time, like he is walking in a mirrored dimension of his reality

I don't really understand what's going on with III, but Gateway I and II are still classics.

gateway 3 is really good if you're a tile puzzle freak (me)
