The Outbreak Story

"The Outbreak Story" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. More effort went into the backstory for this "game" than the game itself, and given that the backstory is a cringey high-school anime club dropout fan-fiction, the game itself is a bit of a disaster. Thanks, GameMaker Studio... empowering amateurs to waste $100 through Steam Direct everywhere. Still yet to be responsible for a truly successful game, too. Anyway. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. If I could give this a neutral review I would! I absolutely adore the pixel art! And the reload animation for shooting does feel very very cool! But as a game im not too sure all the pieces click together. However it is free, so maybe just try it!

unplayable, first fight gave me a quick time event style fight, game wouldnt accept my input tho so I just kept dying over and over

Hi, I just want to clear some things out. I am not that much of a gamer anymore. But I think this game deserves a propper review on how it was made. Again, im not a gamer, but a game-art enthousiast rather. I suck at games, always cheat because of it. That being said, I love game-art. from visuals to gamemechanics to stories. And I have seen the dev designing and developing the game in person. I want things to be private, and so I am not telling about what it all means. But let's just say there is A LOT of expression put in this game. I think this game was made as an expression of struggle of life. And I think all gamers can relate to that. And if you look at the game from that perspective, the game starts already quite quick. I have actually teared up because of how well it translates to how I knew dev at the time. If you want a game for gaming, this might maybe not your jam. But if you want a game that is about a world made for expression, this might be more your jam. But one might not really fully understand why and how it should be translated. I would love a easy-peasy mode with every single game for people who'd actually wanna enjoy the game, but genuinly just are bad at gam…

I played this with a friend, me playing with us both trading off voicing the characters as the dialogue came up. It starts pretty meh but becomes so stupid in a funny way as it goes along, introducing new characters. At some point [spoiler]one character mentions how she accidently burned down her village and killed people, being kicked out and shunned then another character goes "yeah, me too" and proceeds to give a few sentence long mention of how she and her girlfriend are gay and that somehow is the same as accidently killing people because of a power here were born with[/spoiler] this became a running joke because it is so funny and absolutely not intentional. In terms of gameplay, it's pretty meh with something inspired by Kingdom Hearts but not enough polish behind it to be entirely fun but not too bad as to be unplayable. I really hope this developer keeps making stuff given how much potential they show here.

Поиск еды, медикаментов и оружия ощущается как постоянная борьба за жизнь, что отлично погружает в атмосферу постапокалипсиса. Графическое исполнение довольно простое, но функциональное. Интерфейс понятен, и ориентироваться в мире легко. Порадовало разнообразие зомби, каждый тип требует особого подхода. Сюжет, хотя и не поражает оригинальностью, неплохо мотивирует исследовать локации и выполнять задания. Особенно хочу отметить реалистичную систему повреждений и зависимость от экипировки. Тяжелое оружие – это здорово, но и вес сказывается на скорости передвижения. Из минусов – иногда повторяющиеся локации и небольшие баги. Но в целом, "The Outbreak Story" – это хорошая игра для тех, кто ищет хардкорное выживание в зомби-сеттинге. Рекомендую любителям жанра!
