About The Warlock of Firetop Mountain

✦ AI summary

Lead one of eighteen unique heroes through an ever-shifting mountain dungeon where your choice of character changes the story, quests, and strategic options available to you. Battle monsters using an innovative simultaneous turn-based combat system called GridBluff, complete with dozens of distinctive attack styles from poison and magic to brute force, all represented by beautifully painted miniatures.

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is a tabletop adventure come to life! This fantasy solo RPG combines unique, simultaneous turn-based combat with a journey that changes based on each figurine you take into Firetop Mountain! Which hero will you take into Zagor's lair THIS time?

The original 1982 Fighting Fantasy gamebook, written by Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson, has been transformed into an epic table-top adventure game, with new areas to explore, characters to meet, and of course, monsters to slay! Zagor's home assembles right before your eyes as you travel deep into the belly of the mountain.

Each character has their own motivations for being in Firetop Mountain, changing the way the gamebook is written and choices presented. Combat is fought using the digital miniatures in a simultaneous, turn-based system called GridBluff, and the game includes over 100 unique hero and monster figurines to discover.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Battle, sneak, and charm your way through thousands of story options as you play through over a dozen major quests, each unique to a different Hero.

Simultaneous Turn-Based Combat

Experiment with a slew of interesting battle strategies! Each Hero comes with their own set of attacks and manoeuvres. Poison, crossbows, holy magic, or a good old sword and shield – however you want to take down your enemies, there’s sure to be a Hero to suit! Venture forth, kill monsters and earn Souls to prove your might and unlock all eighteen Heroes.

Which Hero will YOU take into the Mountain?

Will you play as the noble and experienced adventurer Alexandra of Blacksand? Or perhaps take the pious and righteous path of battle-priest Landov Lowan? Forego the risks of combat with evasive sleep-bombs as Krea Datura! Or get straight to the punch with hard-hitting rhino-man Twenty-Three.

Beautifully crafted Miniatures

Encounter the nostalgic aesthetic of classic tabletop RPGs by playing with over 100 handsomely painted character and monster miniatures as you explore the depths of Firetop Mountain.

This is my favourite gamebook adaptation format - the tabletop miniature aesthetics are wonderful, the introduction of multiple characters with personal events and sidequests adds a ton of replayability, the combat system is more engaging and strategic than just rolling dice in Fighting Fantasy's usual combat system (even though it also features the dice rolls when clashing). The book itself also holds up! I recommend it very much. I get the feeling they probably won't make another game like this, but if they did, I wish two points were addressed: NO MAZE!!! The maze is genuinely and unfortunately terrible, it's randomly generated but all it is is trying to find every part of the maze, so there's no point to navigation or anything. You just wander until you have found everything and they let you leave. NO SOULS!!!! There is already a much more exciting currency in gold, which doesn't really serve any purpose even though you keep looking for it, and you get so many souls that they almost immediately become meaningless. Let the player keep gold instead - you could even use it for consumables or something at the start of a module, or bring some with you for a future character in add…

I've played this a lot over the years because there aren't many games like it. However, that doesn't change the fact that it's so wildly luck based and full of BS mechanics which make it annoying to play. The maze sections are lazy as hell.

not sure why people are complaining over the difficulty, i found the amount of times i died quite fair, and have so far always finished a run with all characters i started. yes, sometimes some choices instakill you, but you get 3 "restarts" in total, and checkpoints are fairly placed. what helped me "avoid" constantly dying is trying to understand and act as the character i picked. based on their bio and stats i kept asking myself, "what would they choose in this situation?". this led to many memorable moments during gameplay even as a video game, i'd still primarily recommend this game to people who enjoy reading novels, as the visual elements mostly serve as orientation and enrichment rather than explaining what is going on - the latter is done in great detail and skilfully in prose there are more than a dozen characters to play, but they only differ in stats and personal quest, and add little variation to the narrative flow. this leads to the first few playthroughs becoming very memorable, but later ones rather repetitive. i'd recommend playing this once every few weeks/months, to keep things fresh, or picking those characters whose bio seems the most interesting and enjoying a …

Very good one. It's the best book-to-game next to Lonewolf's (which also has a soundtrack btw)

Soft locked in combat because the combat flow does not properly handle all game states (e.g. two large enemies both attempting to move into a smaller space). Combat is a chore anyway, so I will be going back to the Fighting Fantasy Classics version.

I bought this game when MacOS supported 32 bit gaming on Macs. MacOS has since dropped support for 32 bit gaming so I can no longer play the game on current Macs in 2026. Please have this game updated to support current MacOS. I am not sure why this game is listed with MacOS support.
