https://youtu.be/iBamTQ9WgwQ Mechanics that work well for a book don't transfer well to a digital format as far too much gameplay is spent waiting for dice results.3 found this helpful
What is a storybook adventure? It plays like reading a choose your own adventure book where you do dice rolls to decide the outcomes of events. It is fun for a bit, and my wife and I like to play these occasionally (this is the 3rd one we've played) where I read them out loud while she's doing something else. It's kind of a fun thing to do together, but they really boil down to getting dice rolls, so even in my most patient and "follow the rules" mood, I eventually want to just retry a fight or a roll to see a better outcome. Good for what it is, and we did finish the story this weekend. I give it a 3/52 found this helpful
Worse than the Assassin series by Tin Man games and much worse than a Fighting Fantasy book while still trying to follow their format. It really can't think of anything better to challenge you with other than fitness checks, beefy monsters, and even beefier monsters that you're not allowed to fight without the right items. There's noted bugs in it that haven't been fixed since the 2016 release and the writing struck me from page 1 as rather poor.1 found this helpful
Another Classic Gamebook Adventure available on PC!
This is another entry in Tin Man Game's homebrewed Gamebook Adventure Series. Written by a different author compared to the "assassins" series, it still feels good and had very good atmosphere. Story is quite straight forward and less mysterious than the first one (Curse) but it is well presented and you can feel dirty in those catacombs! That's if you don't die of plague first! Or Giant crab! Or more things! Same as the previous entry, you have a cheat mode to help you if it's too complicate. You can easily skip fights and FITNESS checks to discover the ending. If you are familiar with Fighting Fantasy, you will feel almost right at home even if the fighting system and stats (absence of LUCK!!) is different. I recommend it as a fun diversion and if you need some good quality gamebook time on your PC.1 found this helpful
Catacombs of the Undercity, developed and published by Tin Man Games, is a digital gamebook that embraces the traditions of classic choose-your-own-adventure storytelling while layering in light role-playing mechanics to create a tense, decision-driven journey. Rather than presenting a conventional gameplay structure with direct control over movement and combat, it invites players to experience a narrative shaped almost entirely by choice, consequence, and chance. It feels less like navigating a world in real time and more like unfolding a dangerous story where every decision carries weight. The premise places you in a grim subterranean labyrinth beneath a sprawling city, a setting that immediately establishes a sense of danger and isolation. With limited resources and little guidance, your objective is to survive the depths, navigate its many branching paths, and ultimately reach a form of escape or resolution. The underground world is filled with hazards, strange encounters, and fleeting opportunities, and the game wastes no time in making it clear that survival is never guaranteed. This constant tension becomes one of its defining features, shaping every decision you make along…
