About To Be or Not To Be

The greatest work in English literature, now in the greatest format of English literature: a chooseable-path adventure!

William Shakespeare’s Hamlet has finally been restored to its original second-person non-linear branching narrative format. Now it’s up to YOU to decide what happens next. Play as Hamlet and revenge your father’s death. Play as Ophelia and make scientific discoveries. Play as King Hamlet, Sr. and die on the first page!

Discover sweet art as you play from some of the coolest and most attractive artists of Our Time, including Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant), Anthony Clark (Nedroid), Mike Krahulik (Penny Arcade), Matthew Inman (The Oatmeal), Ethan Nicolle (Axe Cop), Andrew Hussie (MS Paint Adventures), Zach Weiner (Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal) and WAY more than I can fit in this paragraph. See ALL the artists at this handy link!

Shakespeare parody, and I love it! I'm not a huge fan of visual novels, though I've played a few. However, I enjoyed this one very much. Some bits were hilarious. Who knew murder and death could be so funny? This is a choose-your-own-adventure (or as the author puts it, the book you want to write, as YOU are the author). You play 3 different characters throughout the game, and there are many different options for each scene, and for each scene, there is a checkpoint. There are multiple checkpoints in the game, so you can go back and play out different scenarios. You'll have to play many different scenarios to get all the achievements. And you'll probably have to play all scenarios (or choices) to obtain all the "artwork." There are a total of 102 art pieces, and you collect them just by playing the game, based on the different choices you make. It's not necessary, however, to acquire all (or any) of the artwork to earn all the achievements. Collecting and viewing the artwork (in the Extras section of the menu) is just a fun side thing, but you don't have to collect all of them. I collected a good amount, but I'm probably still missing about 15-20 pieces out of the 102. I did ea…

It is literally a choose-your-own-adventure book with narration. No animation or real gameplay, and it looks like it was a mobile game at one point. I would totally play this on a mobile. It is short and worth some laughs and giggles, but as a PC game, it just is not enough

This game is effortlessly charming and genuinely enjoyable. I hope there are more of these Choose Your Own Adventure games to come!

Ryan North's To Be Or Not To Be is an unhinged translation of Shakespeare's Hamlet to a Choose Your Own Adventure page-turning game. This is a bloody, humorous tale with odd mini-games. I supported the Kickstarter for the print version, with some of the milestones being more and more great guest artists contributing to the work.
