Trigger Time

"Trigger Time" is a somewhat average 2D retro top down shooter. The game has a "gravity gun" gimmick to let you pull and push stuff around, like Half-Life 2 had in 2004, only this came out in 2017, and the developers didn't know how to do 3D graphics. I wonder why it failed? Maybe something to do with underperforming against games over 10 years older as a business plan had something to do with it. Well, this is a top down shooter, it's a weak format that doesn't do well on PC, which is capable of much better... an old dead genre that wasn't resurrected by this, to say the least. Shoot hordes of enemies, go through some narrative (hey, at least it has that going for it). At least it's modestly well polished and the gameplay is smooth (but if you can't get a 2D game to run smoothly in 2017, you probably shouldn't be in the gaming industry). The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Trigger Time is a free top down shooter that mixes fast shooting with physics puzzles. We play as a marine fighting through nine large levels filled with enemies, hazards and bosses while trying to stop Professor Nathan and his army of cybernetic mutants. It has a very old school feel to it, but the different gameplay ideas stop it from being completely basic. The shooting is probably the strongest part. We get eight main weapons and three secondary weapons, and the game tries to make each one feel useful for a different situation instead of just giving us slightly different versions of the same gun. The combat can get pretty hectic, especially when there are lots of enemies on screen at once. The gravity gun is easily the most interesting mechanic. We can grab objects, move them around and throw them at enemies, but it is also used for solving puzzles and clearing blocked paths. Being able to pick up things like rocks and barrels and use them as weapons gives the combat a nice little physics based twist. The levels also do a good job of changing things up.
