It is set primarily in Europe of the 16th century, the time of exploration. Players choose from among 6 different characters, each with their own background. While doing so they make friends with sailors from across the world as they sail the seas for adventure.

✦ AI summary

Players report significant technical issues with this Steam release of the classic game, with many unable to get past the title screen due to disk errors and the game being locked to a Japanese PC-98 version in an outdated emulator rather than offering the English Western release. Those who manage to work around the technical hurdles find an ambitious historical exploration and trading sim with meaningful choice in protagonists, though the presentation and localization issues frustrate players hoping to revisit a cherished memory.

Uncharted Waters II, developed and published by KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD., stands as a landmark example of how ambitious design can transcend technological limitations. Even decades after its original release, the game feels remarkably expansive, offering a blend of exploration, trade simulation, and role-playing elements that still feels distinct in today’s landscape. Set during the Age of Exploration, it doesn’t just recreate a historical period—it invites players to inhabit it, giving them the freedom to define their own path in a vast, interconnected world of ports, oceans, and competing ambitions. One of the game’s most defining features is its choice of protagonists. Instead of funneling players through a single storyline, it presents multiple characters, each with unique motivations, starting conditions, and narrative arcs. This decision fundamentally changes how the game is experienced. A player who begins as a merchant will naturally focus on commerce and trade routes, while another who takes on a more adventurous or combat-oriented character may spend their time uncovering discoveries or engaging in naval warfare. These paths aren’t superficial variations—they meaningfu…

The game does not go past the title screen. The error message is in Japanese, obviously. Google translate did its best, and said something about new characters...C drive...2nd disk...and eventually it goes to Disk Error press Return to retry repeatedly. asking for a refund. Shame. This was my first video game, and I was hoping i can relive that memory.

A highly acclaimed educational tool in game format. It motivates me to relearn Japanese, which I studied 30 years ago but have since completely forgotten.

It's the PC-98 version of the game sandwiched in an emulator that isn't even updated to support Unicode. Yes, it works, but kinda disappointing. They might as well shove the Western release into DosBox and offer that as the English version. PS: For those complaining about the game not working right: You need to make sure the C disk is in virtual drive 2. In fact you need to swap disks in virtual drive 2 periodically.
