The way of the Trader is, on the opposite, mostly about developing your riches and your economic power. To be the most powerful Trader of the New World, you have to create trade routes, build industries and develop the economy of the colonies.
Of course, in Free Play mode, you can mix both of those in any way you want, letting you create your own unique and exciting story.

The game is fun to play, especially the pirate portion. However the trading portion is poor due to there not being able to earn enough money to complete the campain. it is too cheap, even on the easiest level.1 found this helpful

While it is an older title and you will definitely notice some missing modern Quality of Life (QoL) features, the sheer depth of the sandbox completely makes up for its age. No chance to play with acceptable graphics on ultrawidescreen, especially with up to date resolutions. The ingame resolution is fixed at 1980x1020 max. You can try to tweak it via config, probably that works for 16:9 screens of higher resolutions, but not for ultrawide. The UI-scaling that you can activate via config doesn't help much since some parts of the map are upscaled together with the UI, so the map looks terrible and muddy even with higher resolutions. Gameplayewise i can't say much since it's no fun to play with such an ugly UI & map. But it looks much like Patrician IV, just focusing on another region in the world. Since i already know Patrician IV and it's not that good i will try no further. Looks like the identical uninteresting, casualized business simulation without anything new.
