Somehow worse than Risen 11 found this helpful
I've given Risen 2 more chances than almost any other game. First on physical discs, then on GOG, and now on Steam. The platform was never the problem, the game itself was. For a long time, I kept trying to convince myself that I liked it because I have so much respect for Piranha Bytes. They created some of my favorite RPGs of all time: Gothic 1 and 2, as well as Risen 1 and ELEX to some lesser extent. I wanted to believe that Risen 2 was better than I remembered, but after several attempts, I have to admit that it simply isn't. I've come to accept that even the developers I admire can fail, and they deserve the same honest, unbiased criticism as anyone else. My biggest issue isn't the shift from a generic fantasy setting to a pirate theme. In fact, I think giving each of their franchises its own identity was the right decision. The Gothic series already filled the classic fantasy role. The real problem is that most of the criticism you'll find in other reviews is justified and despite multiple playthrough attempts over the years, my opinion hasn't changed.
