Vallentine against Darkne is an extremely basic 2D platformer based in a mythical realm. Before I start the review, I do commend the developer for trying, and attempting to be consistent with updates and taking on feedback from players on first release (which is never easy). Unfortunately, I can not recommend this game though. Vallentine against Dakne has no menu and extremely basic UI. The game supports both English and Portuguese but has them both simultaneously displayed throughout the game. No menu option means sound, video settings, controls, etc. are not able to be changed. A simple language feature on the menu would have sufficed. There is no real set story unfortunately, more or less left up to the player's imagination. Enemies have cute, unique designs but the pathing is extremely basic. There is no achievements either, which means your primary and only objective is to reach the end of the level, that is literally the only premise of the game. Controller and keyboard support is available, you only need the basic arrow keys to jump, move forward, move backwards, etc. No attack and no ability to disable/kill enemies (even when landing on their head). When jumping on an en…10 found this helpful
Valletine against Darkne is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This shovelware platformer is painfully generic and doesn't feature any notable "gimmicks" like gravity reversal, dual characters... or anything else for that matter. If a platformer could be distilled to as generic as reasonably possible, this is it. This is more dumbed down than Super Mario Bros, and that came out in the 1980s. There's really no excuse for such a poor quality game here. There's a bunch of garbled text, part Spanish, part English that I think is supposed to help you work out how to play... not that anyone wanted to (see below for the almost comically poor player count). From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no options to change the resolution for the ga…2 found this helpful
Simple game, the sprites are nice. The menu could use work as it does not have any features and the text could be cleaner as it just sorta floats around in the levels, but the actual gameplay isn't bad. You cannot defeat enemies by jumping on them like in mario, but you can avoid damage if you jump of them or let them jump on you. However, this mechanic can be inconsistent since the hitbox can sometimes still register if you are hit near the side. There's no saving but there are checkpoints at the start of each level, once returning to main menu you must start at level one. You get 4 lives unless you fall off the level. I got to level 4 or 5 and did not think any of the levels were 'too long' to complete. the levels were generally well thought out in terms of challenge and difficulty progression, apart from some awkward enemy placement or tight spaces where i felt i couldn't avoid being hit. I also thought the music selection and sound effects were suitable although a bit loud. There is no language select, Portuguese and English are both displayed and You can play with keyboard or xbox 360 controller. Pretty good game from a beginning developer i think, remember to take it easy an…
