I've only made it through Aine's route so far, but I appreciate that this is a farming/survival sim with some actual difficulty. It runs fine on Steam Deck, though the controls are a bit rough; you may need to use the touch screen instead of the track pads to reliably gather stuff while foraging and I found combat a bit difficult with the trackpad as well. However, I am disappointed that the character interactions are so heavily pushed as romantic that their storylines abruptly end if you choose not to date a character,1 found this helpful
I really appreciate how the storytelling explores the relationship between the siblings and how they navigate the hardships in Old West. Bonus: you can choose the siblin for your game run (it changes your skills and many choices within the story). Although the gameplay is primarily concerned about survival, homesteading, etc. and it leans into cozy horror at best, I spent quite a time with this game and I'm planning on getting back to it soon.1 found this helpful
Great game, the story is really good and I love the farming mechanics. It's very cool how the game is basically a different experience if you play as a different sibling. I would definitely recommend this game1 found this helpful
Veil of Dust: A Homesteading Game, developed and published by Calamity Bay Games, is a narrative-driven farming and survival RPG that distinguishes itself through emotional depth and historical grounding. Set in the harsh deserts of 1860s Eastern Oregon, the game follows siblings Shane and Áine Callahan as they attempt to rebuild their lives after a profound personal loss. What initially appears to be a traditional homesteading simulator gradually reveals itself as a story about grief, resilience, love, and the quiet strength required to carve out stability in an unforgiving landscape. Unlike many farming simulations that prioritize optimization loops and sandbox freedom, Veil of Dust places character development at the forefront. Dialogue is extensive, introspective, and often vulnerable. Conversations are not merely transactional exchanges for quests or rewards; they explore themes of trauma, purpose, and human connection. Each sibling has distinct personality traits and emotional arcs, and their potential romantic relationships unfold organically rather than feeling like optional side content. The writing treats relationships with care, presenting them as gradual developments s…
I am really enjoying this game so far. It's a very heartfelt survival/life sim in a fantasy historical setting. The gameplay loop is pretty satisfying, and the characters have a lot of depth. There's enough of a difficulty curve on Challenge mode to keep things interesting, yet it still feels accessible (even cozy). I would definitely recommend to fans of farming sims and emotionally storytelling.
fun and interesting take on the genre
