Veins Like Tapeworms

This game tells a story about social isolation, resentment and being chained by an awful past that taught you all the wrong lessons. If you've ever been stuck in an awful, stressfull job where you hated your boss and all of your coworkers while barely keeping it together, this game might be for you. The way Veins Like Tapeworms uses its body horror to make its points feels so natural, as if this is what horror was always meant to be. Genuinely touching and incredibly heartfelt. If you can relate to the main character at all, I promise you will get something out of it.

I bought it because the premise was very interesting to me but I was not expecting something this good. Any fan of horror visual novels should get this and explore it

Veins Like Tapeworms is a simple and interesting Visual Novel I wasn't expecting to like as much as I was. Back in October of 2024 I was playing through the demoes of several games since I was in a game exploring mood. I tried the demo of this game on a whim and to my surprise it was my favorite game of the demoes I played. A Visual Novel needs two things in order to really click, a good and unique art style (with good art direction to match) and good writing. I am happy to say this game has both. You play as a traumatized AFAB enby named Damien who is stuck in a ♥♥♥♥ job and is being coerced to doing more labor then they are being paid for. The writing reflects the ugly reality of how trauma and the brutal demands of the system twists you up extremely well, so much so that when I showed screenshots of this game to my wife (whom has endured her share of the worst of the world) her exact words were "What game is this and who's been reading my mind?" Real recognizes real and the writing came from a very real place. Another quote from somebody I showed this game to sums up the experience the early parts of this game captures. This game is an absolute banger. I don't have anything deep to say about it, but Demien is the type of character I absolutely adore~! Gods, I put these sorts of vibes into quite a few of my characters. Not all of them at once, but scattered bits and pieces. They hit close to home in that regard, seeing reflections of my own creations in them. Seeing this character develop along the different routes was quite fun! I will say I have my preferences on the routes, buuuut... I won't spoil which ones I like the most! Play the game yourself! I wanna put this game in my profile showcase! It's a good one!

A beautiful, horrifying dive into the mindset of being stuck in survival/defensive mode, unable to trust after being hurt too often and not seeing any way out. Add in a toxic influence enabling your worst ideas, and you have the premise of the game. The writing is evocative and disturbing; the cruelty done to and by the protagonist often rings far too true. The art is honestly quite charming and highly effective - the sheer quantity of it and attention where it counts in things like expressions comes through. Highly recommended.
