Yusha Prototype

To those who may or may not know about the development of this game, this is actually designated as CHAPTER 1 of the game with chapter 2 being in active development as shown on the creator's pixiv fanbox page. So yes, while this chapter is considered finished, there's a continuation of sorts in the works. It wasn't immediately obvious that was the case as it doesn't seem this was indicated anywhere on the discussion board or in the updates. So what about the actual review? Aside from the blatant references to other media for little reason and the creator's very noticeable stance against AI art plastered in some areas of the game, a lot of this game is extremely janky. Platforming is definitely way too precise than it needs to be sometimes and the combat sounds meaningful on paper, but quickly becomes pretty mindless the moment you realize dodging is superior to parrying. For all the importance of parrying was mentioned to be, dodging is the far better option given the i-frames are really generous being able to loop bosses out of attack patterns when timed well. I wanted to like the game, there are nice design elements and pixel art here, but after saying that the game is finally released but clearly lacks so much content, I cannot recommend anyone buying this at the time being. plenty of stuff is just "being worked on" as the game clearly says, which is not what I would call a final release.

So, there is a lot of solid aspects that I liked about the game and there are also some things that I disliked. I think that the overall negative reviews to the game are very harsh. Now, I understand that the game is probably shorter than it really is, so I am still waiting for that aspect, but I don't get the negative reviews saying the game is too hard. I mean there are moments where I had to replay the boss fight a few times. However, there is a parrying system in the game that I think a lot of people neglect to talk about which must lead to their frustrations, even so much as comparing it to harder than Elden Ring (on some accounts). Overall, the game has its challenge, but it also has a unique side scroller style that isn't too easy. I think the game nailed a solid hook and story. Creating the world that it is built around. As previously mentioned though, the game is a tad short with a $6 price tag. I personally think that $6 is the absolute max the price can be with what is in the game. Paid money for what entirely feels like an incomplete game. It has a difficulty which stems from controls, not skill or character abilities. No discernable reward for advancing or defeating a boss. I guess 'prototype' means it's the initial, worst game of what hopefully is to come with updates. I can't recommend a game which needs an overhaul.
