About Breath of Fire IV

Story
"In a far-away world, two continents float, separated by a vast swamp-land.
For eons, no contact existed between the two continents because ships couldn’t sail across the expanse.
At last, when the historic first contact was made between the two powers, war erupted!

After long and costly fighting between the Fou Empire in the west and an alliance of countries in the east, both sides exhausted all their strength and resources.
With no other alternative, the two powers agreed to an armistice.

One year later, Princess Elina vanished.
She had been traveling in the east from town to town, exploring battlegrounds and visiting war veterans.
Her trail vanished in a small town near the front line.
Nobody knew her whereabouts!

The Eastern Alliance wanted to avoid sending a large army to the front.
Such a move would be a political blunder, breaking the armistice and stirring up hostilities.
It became impossible to carry out a large-scale search for Elina.
Time passed... with no sign of the princess.

Elina’s sister, Princess Nina, finally makes up her mind.
She leaves on a journey in search of her sister – by herself."

Characters
Ryu
Ryu meets Nina while he is lying unconscious on a street in a desert town in the eastern continent. His race and native land are unknown. Ryu has a Dragon’s Eye, which empowers him amazing abilities to transform into a dragon and summon dragons.

Nina
The princess of Wyndia, a town of the Fae tribe (winged folk). Nina meets Ryu on her journey to seek her lost sister Elina. Though somewhat naïve, Nina is skilled in Healing magic.

Scias
A mercenary soldier, Scias was hired by the eastern side during the war. Scias becomes the party’s watcher. He is very quiet and aloof from the world. Scias can perform a powerful double attack with his sword.

Cray
A young leader of the Woren tribe (cat people) in the eastern alliance, Cray joins Nina to search for Princess Elina, his childhood friend. He has a strong sense of responsibility and acts as the leader of the party. His high offensive and defensive abilities are very dependable.

Ershin
Ershin wears completely sealed armor to protect her from any kind of curse. Since she wears the armor all the time, no one knows her real face or background. She meets the party in a mysterious place polluted by a curse and decides to join them.

Ursula
Ursula is a middle-class leader of the Fou Empire. She came to the eastern continent in search of dragons, and meets up with Ryu and his companions. Ursula was brought up in the military, and knows very little about worldly concerns. She is excellent at attacking with both magic and weapons.

Fou-Lu
Fou-lu unified the western continent single-handedly with his paranormal powers. He became the first emperor of the Fou Empire several hundred years ago. Despite his youthful look, he has mystic dignity. It is said that he predicted his own resurrection as he passed away.

Capcom expects you to do the work for them. They want to pretend this port is more convenient than emulating the game yourself. Its not. At first, I thought the negative reviews were over exaggerated. I thought, "No cloud save storage? I'll just use Ludusavi to backup my save like other games." And, "Controller UI isn't working without mods? Alright, should be simple. I tweak game files in notepad all the time." Boy, was I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wrong. The instructions to get controller UI to match your gamepad are convoluted. Just when I thought I was done, I still couldn't get the UI to change from keyboard. It literally feels like the game was built to fight you on this. This is "Games for Windows Live" levels of needless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

TLDR: Yes, I recommend any of the BOF entries, BUT, there's no cloud saves, it's a poor port, the button layouts only show mouse and kb on my end and worst of all many people can't even run the game for some reason... Capcom makes amazing remakes, but rereleasing a beloved franchise in this poor of a state is kind of a let down. So it's a ''yes buuuuuut...''' Story: Same old, same old. If you've played any of the BOF entires you know it' gonna be with Ryu and Nina. Our dear, blue haired, silent protagonist Ryu appears, gets to discover the world with Nina, and ultimately decides to protect it with his dragon powers. What makes BOF 4 slightly different than most JRPGs of its time is you also get to see the POV of the antogonist, Fou-Lu, the first emperor. Which, early on, shows that he has a huge connection to you, but what oh what could it ever be? Why can he just wake up like that? Why does Ryu just spawn outta nowhere like that? Well, doesn't this just beat all? Gameplay: Another big difference from most JRPGs of its era is that there is a front and back row which you can swap at any time. The back row recovers AP each turn, but what they recover is only temporary AP, so …

Game crashes sometimes, but overall it's been a smooth experience. It took me like 7 years to finally get to breath of fire 4 and 5, this one is my favorite in the series by far. :>

If your looking to just play the game then this will work but if your actually wanting to be treated like a customer and not a consumer the game lacks MANY features that a modern re-release should of came with. *Cloud saves should be included *Save Controller rebinds (this is hit or miss, for me I have to rebind every time I play) *Removal of DRM so Mods can be used to fix what Capcom refused too. *Higher FPS (the launcher lets you choose 30-60hz and the game is still locked to 30. *Restore lost/censored content (or allow mods to do this) *Speed up and Slow down keybinds *Cheats Menu Overall the game runs and plays fine, but if you feel you deserve more than just "fine" then skip this cash grab and nab it on GOG where most of these issues aren't issues.

Unless you loved this series as a kid I would not recommend. It is a game from ancient era where you were expected to play this for months, multiple times, without internet and exchange secrets you found with your friends in school. Lets get this out of the way combat in this game is absolute garbage and ruined by fact that the only fun bit of it which is combo spells is dependant on two layers of rng which player has zero control over. You can play perfectly and the game will simply decide nope. While the game has a quality story, well written characters and world it does not just lack QoL features it is going out of its way to maximize players waste of time at every opportunity. Sparse save spots, especially before bosses, lengthy enemy skill animations, Golden Plains, forced minigames, infinite trash mob encounters, enemies with insane dodge chance. As soon as nostalgia glasses fall down, and copium high ends you can clearly see why these games never quite made it to mainstream.
