Valkyria Chronicles 4 Complete Edition

Hey. This game sucks. This is the most On Rails "Strategy" game I've ever played. If you want to play something that doesn't want you to be 'good' at the game, and instead just experience the story. This may be for you. The Aesthetic and general Idea is good and I've completed previous games in this series and really enjoyed them. THIS However is terrible. It feels like they looked at all the other games and thought "Yeah but what if we made it for toddlers?". Imagine if you were playing DnD and every other turn you have to deal with enemies that are directly in your way but don't "count" as enemies because they're "Fake" but they keep killing your team anyway? Imagine if every other turn your DM moved your pieces around mid battle for "Story". All your planning, all your forethought, all your 'strategy' gone. That's this game. You want to have a realistic, balanced and thought out team? No. The best way to beat this mission is all scouts because the only thing you need to do is make it across the map. Did you know or have any inkling to this before hand? No. Only after beating the mission do you go "Oh. I dramatically over estimated this game". This is barely a game. This is a …

Amazing game! I wish there were more jrpgs like this one, the combat was very unique for a jrpg, like xcom but not, and upgrading the units was extremely satisfying!

Recommended, I think there's some rebalancing which makes shocktrooper viable in this game compared to older VC1.

I loved Valkyria Chronicles 1, I highly recommend that game if you like turn based tactical combat games with some skill mixed in. VC4 gets a recommend because gameplay wise it takes the 1st game and builds on it, and the main source of joy for me in this game is the combat. The game looks and plays smoothly which is great. I will say plot and characters wise it's definitely a step down from VC1. The plot starts quite abruptly with no real introduction to the main squad. We're told their history through exposition and unanimated cutscenes. There's a weirdly high amount of sexual harassment of the women soldiers including being grabbed on the butt and looking up skirts but anime be anime I guess. It's just a shame because VC1 didn't have this kind of stuff and while the tone was weirdly dark one minute and there were pig hijinks the next, it generally had respect for it's female characters? That said I can't account for 2&3 as I never got to play them, maybe It's more common than not. The recruitable soldiers get a bit more space to shine in this game with squad stories which give them a voiced story chapter and develops their traits into more positive ones. This part I enjoy…
