About Hack 'n' Slash

✦ AI summary

Reprogram the game itself to solve puzzles and break the rules imposed by a tyrannical wizard, hacking object properties, variables, and even live assembly code as you uncover what's really going on. With countless solutions and the freedom to crash and rewind the world, you'll shape this puzzle-action game into whatever you imagine.

Hack ‘n’ Slash is a puzzle action game about hacking -- reprogram object properties, hijack global variables, hack creature behavior, and even rewrite the game’s code. The only way to win is not to play...by the rules!

The wizard has mandated that everyone confine themselves to the village, the castle armory has started to forge weapons so powerful that no one but guards are allowed to carry them, and anyone who attempts to find a sprite and demonstrate their bravery would face certain death. The new laws are for your own protection, but you don’t buy it. You’ll show everyone what “brave” means and, if you’re clever, maybe uncover the secret reasons why everything’s gone sideways.

Key Features:

  • Use in-game tools to hack the game while you’re playing it
Your sword can hack the variables of objects. You find magic artifacts that allow you to tune global variables to your liking. Discover equipment that lets you see the game’s internal debug visualization to uncover things that weren’t meant to be seen.
  • Hack the code
As you achieve advanced hacking mastery, you’ll be able to dive directly into the game’s assembly in the form of procedurally generated dungeons and modify the live-running code.
  • Make the game yours
Puzzles have myriad solutions, many of which we haven’t anticipated. As you master the game’s hacking mechanics, you can mold and shape the game in whatever way you desire.
  • Crash it!
You’re hacking the game for real! You can totally break it. Roll back in time to change the rules so the bugs don’t cause the world to fall apart, whether they’re yours or ours!

Your earlier actions can soft-lock you out of LATER puzzles with NO way of knowing, then play through an act only to have to rewind and do it ALL over again. This is for a game released in 2014, not 1984? No respect for players time, horrible game design.

Not a bad concept for a game... only really works for people interested in coding/videogame development, and I'm here for that.... but the current iteration feels more like a tech demo to me than a fully finished game.

Literally unplayable. Controls are hardcoded to key values, not the keys. You can edit the controls, but only to add keys and not remove them. In desperation, I installed an english keyboard but guess what? It only registers qwerty for the typing at the start, but not for the in game controls. Never experienced a programmer bork it so badly.

Truly a one of a kind experience, it is one of the few games to make me feel a certain way (I don't know how to put said feeling into words, sorry) that only my very favorite games do. Best played with no gameplay spoilers, though the game may quickly become hard to understand for anybody who does not have a background in coding or at least an interest in learning how internal game systems work. For anybody who is interested in this game but is the type that will have absolutely no clue what is going on with all the code stuff, I still recommend it, but might be best to follow a walkthrough or watching a playthrough of it to keep you from giving up on it. (The following does not contain major spoilers, just information that may diminish the surprise factor of the game.) [spoiler]Every time the game gave me more power, I slowly became more and more terrified about it. (In a good way) So many times I thought "wait, will the game really let me do that?" And the answer was yes, and then I immediately was concerned about the possibilities and fearful of how much I can utterly destroy this world. Genuinely I started to feel like using the powers given to me was possibly immoral. I so…

They certainly made a game! Yeah I mean it has Zelda cuteness, and then also other stuff? I dunno I'm losing steam on this review, which is also what happened while I was playing... Just got boring? Maybe I'm too depressed to derive dopamine from vidjagames for now, so maybe I'll be back? Who knows.
