EARTH DEFENSE FORCE: IRON RAIN

Iron Rain is an offshoot of the EDF series... it's alright. After 25 hours and 30 missions, I was actually having some fun with this one. However those first 30 missions were a bore. I do not recommend this game if you haven't played the mainline Earth Defense Force Games as they are far better. Plenty of games, so so many other games are better than this one. However, if you enjoy EDF and you are curious at how this game is, definitely pick it up. You will be a bit underwhelmed, but at the same time shooting bugs is shooting bugs. Positives: Graphics (Compared to previous titles) Customization for characters is better. Negatives: - No Air Raider Class - No mod support - Forces a command line to run the game due to multi cores or it constant crashes.

To preface this review, I had read many of the reviews prior and even watched some gameplay, but out of morbid curiosity I wanted to try the fairly unique prowler class and see if there was even a single redeeming feature that maybe could even justify an impulse purchase during a massive sale and thought to myself how bad could it really be? Turns out this is little more than the early alpha of a no-name chinese mobile game in terms of quality; if I had a dollar for each decent and working feature in the game I would have like 3 cents. Everything from the graphics to the gunplay is uninspired and lackluster. The weapons are pathetically underwhelming, if they even work at all, there's only two classes at the beginning of the game and air raider has been relegated entirely to consumable items (all items, btw, punish you for their usage on top of needing ingame currency to even use), the currency system is deliberately crippled in an attempt to get you to buy it with real money, and all the enemies look like free assets for college unity courses with basically none looking like they actually belong in the game. I can’t really put my finger on it but I actually prefer this one to the main line series and I hope yukes gets another crack at it one of these days! Helped to cure my helldivers 2 addiction..good times!

EDF: Iron Rain will likely not function right out of the box for you. I needed to manually patch the game plus mess around with the game's steam launch parameters to make it further than the intro cutscene. And unfortunately, the game still had plenty of bugs (hehe) besides. Including rapidly flashing strobing equipment menus! Beyond the technical hiccups, it's EDF but mediocre. Character creation is neat, the final boss has a neat design and the winter-y setting is fun (though extremely underused IMO) but it's simple, dull, and exhausting. Even on normal, some of the late-game missions took me 20+ minutes of brainless bullet hosing to beat. And between a lackluster enemy variety, awful gun foley work, bullet sponge enemies, and the constant staggering any time anything attacks near you? It quickly devolves into an exhausting slog. I can't imagine how tedious it must be to go for all achievements or a full game clear (And yes, I know I'm saying this as a big EDF 4.1 fan).
