Outcast - Second Contact

If you're looking for a "good" game don't play this… --- How can I say that and still recommend it? This game is a piece of gaming history preserved as a remake, along with its original audio and voice recordings. It's a very OK game, but it's not particularly good by modern standards. But it is an interesting look into early open world game development and a nostalgia trip for those who lived through the 1990's gaming era. It's by no means a terrible game, but its main claim to fame is having done a lot of things first. Unfortunately in the decades since than, everything that has learned from this game has mostly done it better. --- Open world? Yes, but a lot of it is empty and bland. NPC's that have interactive conversations? Sure, clunky dialogue and compressed audio quality. Story: Claptrap and nonsense. Controls: rudimentary. Stealth: You can pretend it has that, it will certainly claim there is. Gunplay: Minimal ammo, bullet sponge enemies. Camera: It hates you and your dreams. Just remember, this is a remake of a game that came out in 1999, and it preserves the original audio and gameplay, with all of its flaws. It's mainly a graphical improvement and even then it's not …

Replaying the original (8/10!) I love so much in this updated version, all *very* good so far. ( Note: the sequel to this, "Outcast A New Beginning" is a truly fantastic game 10/10, one of the best and miles beyond this one.) You'll be better off with a guide as Second Coming is old school ( contrary to the A New Beginning that has something of Skirim waypoint markers ). Months ago had a problem Second Contact with a black screen starting, but now no more: specially with Win 11 Pro and drivers updated. In my case, without using Admin. rights at all, though couldn't hurt if necessary. Towards the end was a buggy mess. Finished the main game whilst my enemies were t posing. good stuff, didn't even get the achievement for finishing the game but.. overall I really enjoyed playing. This game was way ahead of its time when it came out, the original I mean. Second Contact gave new life with better graphics and polished gameplay including controller support and console releases. I definitely recommend this game and the other ones.

Nice remake but like the original it has some bugs. Nice to see this universe in better visuals. If you're a fan of the original, you will like this.

While the game is definitely dated, I found the writing charming, self-aware, and very funny. Good game overall, and from what I've read, a pioneering effort in 3rd person-shooters and adventure games.

Well done remake of the original game of 1999. Typical game plot with 1990s action hero and vibes of those times, now old-fashioned but in a positive way. Relatively open world subdivided in different but always awesome sections, simple, linear and repetitive but also interesting and motivating classic "walking" quest design (find hidden item, kill sb, speak with sb; push button aso). Pure nostalgica for players who witnessed the 1990s and 2000s. I like it.
