About Shin Samurai Jazz

Shin Samurai Jazz is a platform-adventure game. It combines the likes of film noir and samurai cinema, presenting them with 8-bit graphics, an electro-jazz soundtrack, and a comic/manga-like style creating a unique atmosphere.

Unlike it's predecessor, samurai_jazz, Shin Samurai Jazz features jumping mechanics inspired by chuunori, an old technique used in kabuki theatre to give the illusion of flying. It's combat mechanics consist of hacking and slashing with the ability to juggle enemies and perform mid-air combinations, also inspired by chuunori. While the adventure elements remain intact, the puzzles are more complex with varied level designs and enemy placements/attack patterns that make use of the game's mechanics.

Features:
  • Adventure through an 8-bit city and free it from it's pixelated nightmare
  • Chuunori inspired platforming with double-jumping, wall-jumping, and aerial dashing abilities
  • Perform attack combinations on land or in mid-air and juggle enemies to overcome their strategic placement and attack patterns
  • Solve puzzles that will test your platforming skills
  • Supports Xbox 360 controllers

Shin Samurai Jazz is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This badly made GameMaker Studio template job is a craptastic pixeltrash platformer with a loose "samurai" theme featuring a lot of hack and slash as well as your usual wall jumping, double jumping, hazard avoiding, and there's a minor "adventure" game element. None of these individual factors is implemented remotely well. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but i…

It's fine. Short and chill. The storytelling might be a little unpolished (at least that's how I felt) but it's not a big problem. Just dont expect too much.

Soundtrack is great, some really nice loops and smooth beats. Unfortunately the game is very frustating to play though. The melee combat is not good with only one button attack and one button parry (that you can use against like 3 types of enemies). All melee enemies approach you extremely slowly and once you start attacking they are stunlocked and easy to take down. The problem is every time you die or leave the screen all the enemies respawn. This makes getting through the game extremely tedious as there is a sort of overworld hub you have to go through multiple times and you just want to jump past the enemies without fighting them because it's so dull but they will get some cheap hits in and kill you. You will die more times to accidentally standing in an enemies hitbox while trying to attack them than you will from any actual attack the enemy does (touching them hurts you for some reason). Even the boss battles are trivial when you start attacking them and they can't move as you just keep spamming attack. The later acts will spawn a ton of enemies on the platforming sections which makes retrying them a slog as you have to slowly kill these same enemies over and over each ti…

It´s a mix of NES retro game, Yokai detective story, Bruce Lee (C64) and Super Meat Boy. You have to train some skills to reach each exit. But actually every mistake you make is your own. You just have to get better. I can recommend this game if you are tolertant to fail over and over again until you finally find out what the programmers want from you.

It ain't good. Samurai Jazz was at least ironically fun, but this one is downright miserable.
