Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars: Reforged

When I heard that there's a remake of the first Broken Sword, it flared up a dormant desire inside me to relive the nightmare. I played this way back in college as a dare from one of my friends who lent me the game and called it 'The most boring game' ever created. I slapped it in my Playstation and I was hooked to the story ever since, minus the puzzles. I painstakingly finished the game in 2 months (one month of thinking on how to get past the GOAT in Ireland. That's 30 days, 2 hours a day, before I call it quits and swap to other games <insert Final Fantasy VII, or VIII, or Tomb Raider, or other new games that may come>). At that time, there was no internet yet. Google was created three years after playing this in 97 (but there's already gameFAQs to check, or is there?). So there's no way of cheating your way to solve these point and click games before, but to play and enjoy the tormenting puzzles. I'm just reliving the nostalgia of whacking my brains, try to figure out 'the next thing' to do. Which, by the way, had been my key to a successful career of troubleshooting Network Problems (Information Technology), thanks to these types of games. The game is not…

I couldn't even finish the game, it just didn't match what I was looking for. I'm a big fan of LucasArts point'n'clicks, played almost all of them, but this one has a few major differences. Basically, most of the puzzles consist in talking to every NPC about every possible topic to get the information you need. And there's a LOT of talking. Really, a lot. The puzzles themselves are pretty basic, and the old-school fun of wandering around thinking about what to do is almost non-existent. It just ended up extremely boring and frustrating: in a nutshell, after spending 15 minutes of talking, you get to do something obvious and move on. The gameplay is all right. I tried the classic style with hints only on request, which are pretty well done. On the bright side, the historical background and the investigation style are cool. The graphic redesign looks great, and the ability to swap between original and new design is fun. But I got tired of spending hours cutting through speeches.

Broken Sword continues to be a staple of the adventure gaming format of the nineties!

Bought this game without having heard of the series before. Had an incredible time - played it all in one setting and have now bought the rest of the series. Amazing game wth a great sense of humour and fun puzzles.

One of the all time best point & click games. The reforged version is perfect for first time broken sword players. If you have nostalgia for the game, you may prefere the original release, if you use a CRT.
