Achromatic (2018)

Honestly, this is a great game. For many harder stages, thinking backwards actually leads to success, as after a while, the remaining steps are not daunting anymore; so in most cases, building a mental model for the level is feasible, and a little experimenting bridges the remaining gaps. I see people complaining about trial and error, but this can be heavily alleviated by starting over on every "accidentally solved" level and identifying why the solution worked. There is a mix of fun and frustrating levels, which is expected in puzzle games. The last map is especially unpleasant, while really elegantly designed at the same time; a true vexing masterpiece that serves as an apt conclusion.

great installment in the grid-based minimalist non-sokoban puzzle genre. for many games in this niche, solving puzzles feels like stumbling around the maze of state space, hoping the path to a solution presents itself. not for Achromatic. every level in this game is deliberate. one could explain in plain english what the challenges are and how to overcome it. succinct and rewarding. would recommend.

I'm sure people with more puzzle-focused brains will like it, but the most of the puzzles were far too open-ended for me even begin to guess how to solve them.

Elegant puzzles, clean design, zero hand-holding. Kinda like zazen but instead of staring at a white wall you catch yourself staring at two dots for ten minutes questioning your life choices.
