Gothic® 3

One of my alltime favorite RPGs and the last of the "real" Gothic games from the original developer. I played the 1.6 patch version, although my AI buddy and others recommend the 1.75 community patch version. There were a few times when I probably would not have been able to proceed without my good buddy Marvin, the developer console, so yes the game is still a bit quirky--maybe 1.75 solves most of those issues. One of the best examples is that when I got to the Monestary, Milten was not in the Innos cave where he is supposed to be. Turns out he was struggling to *walk* there through Nordmar from his last location! I solved this with the "goto" console command by teleporting to him and helping him by clearing the way and ushering him to the Monestary! I love that the game has all the familiar characters from prior games, and that they all play a role in this one. Epic conclusion to the Gothic story, and a must for all who played and enjoyed the first two games! Highly recommended 9/10 (even with the quirks).

Gothic 1 and 2 are video game classics, for sure. But Gothic 3 stole my heart. The developer did not / could not finish the game properly, which is sad in all honesty. But the community patch saves this title for me. And oh boy, what a world. I love to come back to this title every now and then and trying out new builds. But what really keeps me getting back is the world and the soundtrack. In my opinion, Gothic 3 has the best soundtrack of all of those three titles and it just warms my heart. I cannot explain.

Absolute failure. This game feels like a buggy and miserable Oblivion. I had the same feelings: after marvelous predecessor and game with inflated runtime and useless quests. The story... There is no story. The game forces you to grind 75% of trust with the best path being a double-agent. Characters are not memorable at all. Where is that magic and atmosphere from the previous games? It was awesome to figure out where not to go, where to go, where Lester is, how to build a character. Almost nothing is left here except endless identical caves, monsters and quests. There are good things. But they are small and inconsistent. For example, surprisingly, physics and twisted corpses were funny to watch for a while. Old characters met in various spots. The ending shows what happened to them in Fallout-fashion without dropping the main story on a cliffhanger like previously.
