Cold Waters

Awesome game / simulator for the enthusiast. Recommended for hours of fun and adrenalin.

Great simulator, I've loved playing it.

Of all subsims on Steam and beyond, I would say Cold Waters is the pinnacle of “easy to learn, hard to master.” The controls and interface are fairly simple and easy to pick up between clicking/keybinds alongside a reference card you can pull up at any time. The difficulty comes from tactical gameplay: balancing a lot of risk and reward when chasing after surface ships while dogging it out with peer submarines. You will spend a lot of time dodging torpedoes and outsmarting decoys. The late-period campaigns will give you more advanced tech at the cost of dealing with more missiles and ASW aircraft, while earlier campaigns like in the Skipjack will involve finesse with unguided torpedoes like what you’r see in Silent Hunter or UBOAT. Cold Waters is also SSN-focused, so your only surface attack duties will be from tube-launched Harpoons and TLAMs. It also goes without saying that DotMod is highly recommended once you get a feel for the game. Bear in mind that it has its own issues and idiosyncrasies as a pretty comprehensive mod to an old and focused game compared to WotS or Sea Power (Knox-class frigates have periscopes apparently). Former submariner here, very entertaining with relatively easy control set. Has more of a bias toward action than real life, would prefer more development of the fire control problem and tactical positioning, but understand that most casual players probably wouldn't be patient enough for that. Highly reccomend dotmod, as it enhances the controls and makes game play less clunky (less switching of screens).
