Story
It’s the beginning of the year 2020. You are a frustrated thirty-something wannabe writer from Warsaw who decides to make something out of himself. You will amaze the literary world with your earth-shattering book about refugees. It will inspire crowds and galvanize hearts, and expand minds, and change the world in all the right ways.
Before you prepare your Pulitzer Prize acceptance speech, there is only the trivial matter of actually travelling to Africa to gather some notes for the story. You have an ingenious plan to smuggle yourself onto one of the illegal boats that travel to Europe from the shores of Africa while pretending to be a refugee yourself. Surely nothing can go wrong and you are NOT completely out of your depth. Surely.

Developers support the refugee cause
5% of We. The Refugees: Ticket to Europe profits will be donated to charities helping refugees. The first 2.5% goes to the Hope Project - Greek volunteers who helped us meet refugees in person during research. The other half will go to other humanitarian organisation we will choose together with our community.
The uniqueness of We. The Refugees: Ticket to Europe
A Modern, Relevant Setting
The game concerns the refugee crisis at Europe’s southern borders, a very real problem we have been facing for several years.
A Richly Woven story
The complex, multi-layered script comprises nearly 2 million characters, the equivalent of 3-4 novels. Meaningful choices and consequences split the plot into parallel paths, which enables players to meet new characters and discover new storylines during their second and third playthroughs.
A relatable perspective on a complex topic
The protagonist is a European who tries to enter the world of the refugees as an outsider. The game deliberately plays on the cliché of “a white male’s journey to an exoticized world” and subverts it.
Multi-level, original narrative
The game is metacontextual - it is not only a reportage about refugees, but also an interactive fiction game presenting the very process of creating a reportage. This way, the player discovers both the player discovers both the refugees’ journey and a writer’s challenges of exploring the subject.
Authenticity and Factuality
Based on true events, the writing process was preceded by a series of interviews with refugees who were familiar with the concept for the game. To make this possible, the writers team visited the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesvos, where the prototype of the game was presented to refugees and volunteers. The script was also reviewed by experts from relevant NGOs.

We. The Refugees is praised for its exceptional writing, meaningful moral choices, and emotionally resonant exploration of refugee experiences that feels relevant and thought-provoking. However, players express frustration that despite the appearance of choice mattering, some critical outcomes feel predetermined or disconnected from player agency, and the protagonist's characterization can feel frustratingly limited regardless of decisions made.
This text-based game lets you experience the challenging journey of people traveling from Africa to Europe. You make tough decisions on boats, in camps, and travel through countries. It highlights the risks of the sea voyage, the waiting times, and the hope that drives people forward. These aren't just travelers – they're resilient individuals with dreams and strength. Playing this in 2025 feels especially relevant, with similar stories still in the news today. I'd rather talk about the benefits of refugees than about the mechanics of the game, since the mechanics have already been described by many players. Refugees bring so much positive change to Europe. 💰 Let's start with the economy – it's one of the biggest areas where their impact shines. Europe has been dealing with slow growth and labor shortages for years, especially in key sectors. Refugees step in and fill those gaps right away. Studies show that migrants, including refugees, contribute massively to GDP, over time, this leads to more tax revenue. Without refugees, many economies would stall, but with them, there's renewed energy, innovation, and growth that benefits society as a whole. 🏺 Then there's the cul…3 found this helpful
The Game
As a social scientist, I really appreciate this game. Playing as a Polish journalist, you experience the journey of refugees as they struggle to find a way forward and survive. I don’t know how accurate or exaggerated the game’s portrayal is, but it was compelling enough to keep me reading carefully. Unlike some of the comments I see here, I actually quite like the design choice to have no save points. The game eventually breaks the fourth wall to explain why it was designed this way. It makes the experience feel more real: there is no going back in life. Once you’ve made a choice, it’s irreversible, even when the butterfly effect leaves you desperately wishing you could undo it. Through different characters, the game explores various geopolitical issues and seemingly unsolvable problems. Many of the choices in this game felt like a test of my conscience. Do I sacrifice someone else’s feelings and interests for the sake of a book, a showcase? There are no easy answers, as it’s all about perspectives. If social justice can never truly be achieved, I still would like to believe that the Sisyphean effort to pursue it (in any way) has value and meaning. We h…1 found this helpful
Picked this up for just $1.49 at 90% off of its $15 full price in the 2025 Winter sale. So far I completed the beginning fifteen minutes for the second time after having completed the free demo and it's been completely worth picking up the full game. That first fifteen minutes even changed a little bit as this is a choices matter title and I really like that. Definitely recommend playing both the free demo and picking up the full game on sale and will update this review once I invest more time into it. It's a game perfect for picking up and putting down, just as you would a book.1 found this helpful
Near perfect and sets a much higher standard for what a videogames should and can be. I’d start glazing the game but all the other reviews are doing that so il just go over something that’s bothering me I wish that it wasn’t told from the POV of the journalist and sticks so close to that. It’s just such a limiting perspective to use , it lead to the game having a tendency to push the characters that actually matter and their incredibly complex situations/ characters to the side. Im here to learn and understand about the people affected , its even more limiting given the fact that the journalist is so ignorant about the situation and the people. It would have been way better to have a handful of sizeable chapters each detailing a differing relevant persons path , feelings and perspectives. It would lead to a much more complete and deep game. When the game does let u talk to the people around u it is absolutely incredible and is written so maturely . Its just the game much prefers to hit u over the head with detailing how the trip is actually dangerous and incredibly distressing (revolutionary concept ik). After a while it just starts feeling like filler when u just want to g…
I only did one playthrough. I did get this on discount. If there was a neutral score or weak positive I would pick that instead. My biggest gripe? I'm really not sure choices matter. There's a character that in my playthrough died and there was literally no action I could take to prevent this. Yet one minute, irrelevant action I took seemed to kill 1-2 characters. I think the protagonist is an unaware, selfish ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and there wasn't anything I could do to improve upon him. The game is short but there's a lot of fluff decisions that don't add depth. There isn't a lot of dimension to the more major characters. I wondered how many folks from outside of europe had a major role in writing these characters. If you make certain, seemingly innocent decisions at the end it locks out other things you might want to do. I like the overall concept. I liked the descriptions of some characters and environments. I did like some of the out of control realism. There were moments when it seemed to evoke something deeper, at a human level. I will probably replay it, and update this review.
This game feels less like a game and more like a novel you actively live through. Every choice carries weight, and not in a superficial way — you’re constantly pushed into difficult moral decisions that reflect real-world struggles, especially around migration, survival, and human dignity. What makes it powerful is that there are no easy answers. You don’t just play a story… you become part of it, and sometimes you have to live with choices that don’t feel right. It’s emotional, thought-provoking, and surprisingly realistic. One of those rare experiences that stays with you after you stop playing. Absolutely worth it.
