A SHORT GAME BY DE FAULT & CHARD

Foreigners reported to the authorities have a nasty habit of being 'disappeared' by the vigilante English Protection Group.

You're outcasts, living a private life miles from others already. When faced with someone desperate and alone, someone you're in a position to help, is it your responsibility to?

This is a single, film-like scene. You control the actions of Ola, a retired political cartoonist, as well as directing the camera shots between the cinematic angles available.

The second of twelve small, experimental narrative games to be released monthly.

FEATURES
 • Struggle with a timely political dilemma.
 • Choose your own: what does your decision say about you?
 • Direct the camera to shoot the story your way.
 • Lose yourself in surreal colours.
 • Enjoy a moving score with arrangements of 90’s classics by Ricky Z.
 • A tight, intense 10 minutes.

✦ AI summary

The Outcast Lovers is a brief narrative experience about a moral dilemma involving refugees that aims to explore themes of immigration and tolerance, with players praising its emotional resonance and heartfelt storytelling around contemporary issues. However, players are divided on execution, with some finding the characters and dialogue shallow or poorly written, feeling the narrative lacks the depth and impact of the developer's previous work, while others criticize it as more of a visual novel than an interactive game with meaningful choices that feel distinct enough to warrant replaying.
Quick Impression : Incast or Outcast?
Having played many of the games by the same creators, I understand what they were aiming for here. While I previously gave positive feedback on the narrative and this "multiple perspective" mechanic, I’m less convinced this time. The intention and the subject remain commendable, but I personally had trouble connecting with the execution—both in terms of narrative and visual intensity. The philosophical dilemma here is quite straightforward for the characters (the outcasters): should they shelter and care for a refugee they’ve just literally run over, risking trouble with the law and the authorities—or should they report him to avoid consequences? Incast or outcast? The lack of depth in both the characters and the topic prevented me from appreciating the game’s slow pacing, short length, and seemingly simple dialogue—despite the meaningful subject—like I was able to with other games (The Night Fisherman, Ring of Fire, or even The Leviathan: Prologue, though in a different style). It's hard to really attach a "player experience" here, or to clearly grasp the intended emotional path: even if the point is to avoid…
The outcast Lovers
A sequel to The Night Fisherman, I’ll go spoiler free since this is only 10mins. Some of the choices are heartbreaking yet I feel like it’s based on true events happening around the world. Food for thought!

The Outcast Lovers is a sequel to The Night Fisherman. The Outcast Lovers just feels not quite as impactful as The Night Fisherman on broaching the topic of immigration with multiple endings that also don't feel as distinct. Overall, this game is even shorter and also manages to fall shorter too. 2/10

"The Outcast Lovers" is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This garbage tier e-book differs from almost every other e-book on Steam, in that it is not about the authors imaginary anime girlfriend/waifu. Instead, this is a CYOA book about finding a refugee and deciding what politically should be done with refugees, which basically positions this as an e-book pushing political propaganda... certainly about as far from being a game, and as far from being an enjoyable experience for gamers as you could get. It's worth mentioning that this e-book "experience" features some animation and the ability to "look around" various scenes... but none of this changes the operative and crucial fact that there ar…
