About Kingdom of Night

✦ AI summary

Kingdom of Night is an action RPG where you battle demonic forces that have invaded a small Arizona town in 1987, choosing from five distinct character classes and customizing your abilities as you work to defeat Demon Lords and uncover the ancient evil behind the chaos. Fight through the town solo or with a friend in local co-op, collecting gear and mastering skill trees to become powerful enough to stop Baphomet's grip on Miami.

One night, in 1987, in the small town of Miami, Arizona, a satanic cult unwittingly summons the ancient evil, Baphomet, catapulting the town into chaos. John, awoken by the kidnapping of his neighbor, sets out into the night to fight back against the demonic invasion and rescue his friends before it's too late...Take control of John as his adventure leads him through an hour-by-hour experience of what could be everyone's last night on Earth. As John, you will encounter unearthly evils, Demon lords, afflicted townsfolk, high school bullies, and a torrent of engaging, serial-like side stories – all nested in a larger-than-life fantasy that brings the ultimate evil to a neighborhood near you.
Choose your class, customize your abilities, and battle nightmarish creatures as you collect unique gear in order to infiltrate the massive lairs of Demon lords that have taken over the town.

Save Miami

Take down the town’s demons as you get closer to unraveling Baphomet’s grip on Miami. Explore the entire map of the town, interact with a wide cast of NPCs and take on the Demon Generals in the order that you wish.

Choose Your Class

Choose from 5 different classes: Barbarian, Knight, Rogue, Necromancer and Sorcerer. Each class excels differently, providing a unique play style depending on your choice. The class you choose decides your base style, while the skill trees allow for further customization.

Shape Your Character

Skill trees are split into three branches, containing 10 different talents each. As you level up, spend allotted points into any of the three branches of your class. Once you have reached level 10 in your first branch, you are free to cross over into another branch, allowing you to fully customize your play style.

Hoard the Best Gear

Outfit yourself with new equipment via quest rewards, hidden items throughout the town, and scoring random drops from a multi-tiered loot system with variable drop rates. Items range from common to completely unique. The items you collect provide an extra dimension to character stat development and have special abilities that will make you even more powerful.

Co-op With Your Friends

You don’t have to face the forces of darkness by yourself. In Kingdom of Night, either play through the campaign as John alone, or with a friend in local co-op. Team up and synergize different character classes, becoming a torrent of annihilation that the underworld will fear.

A fun romp with an 80's aesthetic. This game shines in the story and setting, and the unique way in which it all comes together, A somewhat open world and freedom of choice to pursue various side quests. The writing and the characters were not especially deep, but more often than not entertaining. The RPG mechanics are fine, but don't blow me away. The same for the loots. It would be nice if exploration and being thorough was more rewarding. I actually was unable to roll credits because the vendors have limited stock and I soft locked during the final battle. I tried to hack our save file and turn down the difficulty, but it was still a bit much. Perhaps I was underlevelled. The devs are great and actually supported a bug in the main quest by taking our save file and pushing a patch shortly after. There are a few small issues here and there, but overall it ran pretty well. Best enjoyed in co-op. So it gets major points for being unique, but a bit of polish and balance would push it over the top to greatness.

Great game with great nostalgia. The art, animation, and sound design were on point. Very well done and very fun quick gameplay. The story got a little slow and text heavy at times but fit the vintage vibe while. The story feels like a pretty quintessential 80's small town coming of age "Chosen One" story. There are some loose biblical themes themes throughout, but nothing divisive. Solid game.

This is one of those times I wish Steam had a number rating system or some kind of middle, inbetween ground. Cause that's where KoN fits perfectly. a solid 7/10. I generally had a good time with it, there is a ton of great ideas, elements that surprised me overall and the start, the setup, the world, characters are just excellent! There were a ton of tropes and references that did get a laugh out of me, or made me respect it when it tried being serious. (Also kudos for their take on a Necromancer! I didn't expect it to work in this kind of game, but it felt so good!) But despite those good points, there is a lot of pain points inbetween everything that really, REALLY let it down. The biggest issue? Combat. Frankly it's not great, at best I'd put it at "serviceable". It started off quite fun at first, little simple but nice animations and plenty to fight but that gets old pretty quick, especially once you start finding the really REALLY big hordes. And it's like that throughout every area. It almost feels like padding. I put about... 20 hours into the game? I reckon a good 8-12 of those hours was likely fighting stuff. And around the fighting is the amount of useless junk equip…

Great style and atmosphere. Fun ARPG with a campy 80's horror theme.
