About Forgotten Fields

✦ AI summary

Forgotten Fields follows Sid, a blocked writer returning to his hometown for one last goodbye before it's sold, where reconnecting with old friends and exploring childhood memories reignites his creative spark. This narrative adventure weaves together relaxing puzzles and slice-of-life moments with a parallel fantasy story Sid is writing, creating a warm meditation on nostalgia and how the past shapes who we become.

Sid is a writer struggling with writer's block, attempting to recapture the feelings of inspiration he felt when he was younger. In order to pay the bills, he needs to think up a story and apply for a grant - the deadline is today - a lazy Sunday in the middle of summer.

On this Sunday, his struggle is disturbed by an invitation to attend an unavoidable family obligation - the place Sid grew up in is about to be sold, and his mother wants him to come home for a small party so he can say goodbye to it. With the deadline approaching and his creative juices having frozen, this is not something he's looking forward to.

Talk to old friends, run through the fields, swim in the ocean, and solve relaxing puzzles in this warm, slice-of-life narrative about nostalgia and the passage of time by the developer that brought you Rainswept.

Features:

 • A warm, slice-of-life narrative about nostalgia, appreciating the present, and the passage of time by the developer that brought you Rainswept.
 • Take part in Sid's creative process as you play through a parallel story set in a fantasy world - right out of the book that Sid is attempting to write.
 • Simple, relaxing puzzles that keep gameplay interesting without slowing down the story.
 • A friendly and supportive cast of characters with deep histories and fleshed-out personalities.
 • Cinematic presentation accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack by micAmic (Rainswept, The Cat Lady, Lorelai, Downfall)
 • An atmospheric, warm, and cozy world to lose yourself in as you get immersed in Sid's journey back home.

This is one of the most contrasted game I've played for a long time. There are abysmal flaws : a lot of technical issues, constant clipping, camera issues, framerate drops and stutter for a very basic game, very janky controls and mini games, and most of all... the "writing" part of the writing (by that I mean, the in-game book the character is writing) is so terrible that I'm suspecting it's intentional for some kind of meta humor. If not, jesus... And yet, there are a lot of qualities. The mood works really well both visually and musically for the 4 hours you will be playing, and most of the dialogues are spot on. Well, maybe because they hit extremely close from home. I mean, I too am a young writer in his early 30s where his parents house is getting sold in a very near future and where everything around him is changing fast. But aside from that, I honestly thought most of the dialogues to be very relatable and touching if you're a young adult. And you can tell it was a personal and important game for the creator, though it doesn't matter if the finished product is terrible on a lot of aspects (but not all) Anyway, I can't tell exactly why, but this still get a positive review…
Lovely Ideas, Rather Too Many Sharp Edges
Forgotten Fields is exactly the sort of narrative adventure I ought to like. Sid, a struggling writer heading back to his childhood home before it is sold, is a good setup for a reflective story about nostalgia, memory and creativity, with occasional excursions into the fantasy tale he is trying to write. And I genuinely wanted to know where it was going. Unfortunately, the game seemed equally determined to make me stop wanting to find out. The presentation is the first problem. There is deliberately simple art direction, and then there is simplicity that rather gives the impression that the budget wandered off before anyone could buy the remaining assets. Forgotten Fields sometimes feels uncomfortably close to the latter. When a scene appears to call for an animated close-up, the game occasionally substitutes a black screen accompanied by sound. This can, of course, be interpreted as artistic restraint. It can also be interpreted as an admirably efficient way of not having to animate anything. Add grass clipping cheerfully through walls and various broken animations when advancing dialogue quickly, and the illusion becomes i…

Forgotten Fields is a gentle narrative adventure built around memory, creativity, family, and the uncomfortable realization that familiar places cannot remain unchanged forever. Developed by Frostwood Interactive and published by Dino Digital, it follows Sid, a writer struggling with creative block while facing an approaching deadline for a grant application. Inspiration is difficult enough to find, but his plans are interrupted when his mother asks him to return to his childhood home for one final visit before the property is sold. What follows is less a conventional adventure and more a personal journey through old relationships, remembered places, and the complicated emotions attached to saying goodbye. Sid's return home gives the game its strongest emotional material. He encounters relatives, old friends, and locations connected to earlier stages of his life, gradually turning an ordinary trip into an examination of nostalgia. The story understands that revisiting somewhere important does not mean returning to the life that once existed there. People have changed, circumstances have moved forward, and Sid himself is no longer the person who originally formed those memories. Th…

Forgotten Fields is yet another narrative masterpiece from Frostwood Interactive, far too overlooked. Like its predecessor Rainswept, the game focuses heavily on writing and atmosphere, this time exploring themes of time, memory, and the importance of family and friends. It's a "cosy" experience, yet still deeply thoughtful, and I was captivated from start to finish. The dual narrative structure, alternating between the ordinary life of a struggling writer and the fantasy world of his own book. These two stories intertwine seamlessly and left a strong impression on me. The soundtrack by micAmic, once again sublime. This studio truly has some of the best music in independent gaming. The vibrant, colourful environments, which create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere, even if the character models remain very basic (expressionless faces, stick-figure bodies). Unfortunately, Forgotten Fields suffers from significantly more bugs than Rainswept. The camera angles are often problematic (awkward perspectives, walking through walls, characters glitching into objects and disappearing). One quest in particular frustrated me: trying to knock a balloon out of a tree, with a hitbox so poorly de…

Time waits for no man. Artistically it's great and can see the love the dev put into the setting. Writing is good. However there will be ample technical issues and wonky controls as you roll through it. I enjoyed it generally speaking but you will have to work through the jank at times and busted clipping as some areas are a bit rough. Save often as you can accidently break the game if you're skipping through cutscenes and it can randomly soft lock certain parts. Still it's worth a look if you like stories that discuss the passage of time and feelings associated with that kind of stuff.
