Super Hunchback

Super Hunchback is an ancient handheld (Game Boy) game from 1992. It's a whopping 31 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs (and serious, wtf is a Game Boy game doing on PC? Oh yeah, abandonware cash gougers, Piko Interactive). Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. This is an extremely shallow and simplistic platformer that has you running a hunchback around jumping over rolling logs and collecting fruit. I'm not sure how much research into hunchbacks the developers did before writing this game, but I don't think it was a lot. Anyway, this is bad, real bad. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game only displays in the horribly limited Game Boy 1:1 aspect ratio. if you want to play a retro platformer where you have to eat fruit through the levels, yoshi's story and adventure island 3 are right there and are amazing games

I'd lament the fact that Piko interactive is selling a legal ROM of an insanely obscure and forgotten Game Boy platformer by Ocean (and a sequel to Ocean conversion of an old arcade game called Hunchback), but... yeah, why is this here and why is Piko Interactive asking almost 9 bucks MSRP for it? This is just a Bleem emulated version of the game with the usual features found in other rereleased by Piko (like their Steam “ports” of GBA shmup Iridion 3D), so no music options, and no colorization, for istance. THAT aside, one would almost want to believe they stumbled upon a “hidden gem”, or a somewhat decent game of its time that is way better than its absurd premise (or the “hunchback with Green Goblin inspired rapeface” cover-promo art) would led on... sadly, this isn't the case. Super Hunchback is a simple affair, really, a fairly basic 2D platformer that has you as Quasimodo jump on logs, avoid obstacles, collect fruit and items for points, with the idea of reaching the bell at each of the 3-5 sequences a level is comprised of, with 9 levels in total, with the goal of saving fair Esmeralda from a villain called Halfenpounder or something that helds her captive in a castle. …

Really good music, but I do wish there was some colorization options to spruce up the game a bit more for the modern audience.
