Resident Evil 2 (1998) (2026)

An upgrade to RE1 on every level possible, it was pretty good. In comparison to RE2R, there are of course some parts that haven't aged well (puzzles are too simple, bosses are worse, Mr X of this game is just kind of there and not as menacing) but it does some things better than the remake. The route system is much better in this one; items you pick up effect the other route directly and it was nice to see how Leon and Claire's stories interject with each other. Thanks to fixed camera I also think this game does the "horror" aspect a bit better. Definitely worth playing, offers a different perspective from Remake. Even though they are "same" games, they are very different in their own approach to game design.

Says unsupported but works fine if you use proton experimental. Some audio crackle on cutscenes. If you have trouble getting the controls working, you can use wine to make it use dinput

I had an absolute blast playing through this game, having experiencing the remake first. The game is a lot more concise compared to the expanded remake, but it did not feel lacking because of it. The areas feel a bit liminal and the RPD layout makes absolutely no sense, but exploring it still felt tense. They drastically increased the number of enemies, but also the number of bullets you get compared to the original Resident Evil, making for slightly less scary encounters knowing you can just blast through them. Some scares still had me jump in my seat, and the overall ambiance of the game is very fitting for a mid-outbreak event. Areas after the RPD felt very new to explore and barely bear any resemblance to the remake. The story also takes some different turns and has different details compared to the remake, but the overarching story remains pretty much the same. I did find the final section of the game a bit lacklustre compared to the remake as the tension doesn't really translate well in the old format. Original Resident Evil games 2/3 done. Finally met OG Leon and Claire after wanting to play this game for SO LONG. It's so interesting to see the difference between the OG and remake of RE2. The controls not too clunky, though definitely need some getting used to. The graphics are even better than the first one. Very amazing to see how the technology has evolved over two years. Only one crash occured too (which was probably my own fault for tap-ing out too often). Leon's A scenario took me roughly 4h. So both A and B are enough content for 10€ imo. Very fair. Get it!
