The Flayed Man

The Flayed Man is short point-and-pick adventure featuring a skinless pixelated man and a few gory moments. I was not particularly a fan of the art style, but it was done well (especially on splash screens) and did make the game look distinctive, so that was a positive in my book. It was cool that you when you right-clicked on hotspots you had more than one thought of the character (equivalent to look). I appreciated the music. Not much melody to them but atmospheric and good choice of "instruments". The confessional bits were interesting, but it was only text, no character graphics, and just clicking all possible choices until you forgave or not. Felt like a missed opportunity for more. I will not recommend the game because of puzzle problems. A grabbable item blended in the background, and I found it by luck. Using an item on another only worked after a certain event and there was no logic to that. So even if you tried it before, as I did, you wouldn't think to use it again and therefore be blocked. Lovely little point and click adventure. Beat it in half an hour, but enjoyed it throughout.

I played this when it was first released as a free game until the devs became absolute babies and started trying to guilt trip people into “saving” the company. Moving from free to paid is such a sketchy move, especially for a game not even worth the $2 it costs now. There are plenty of ways to crowd fund and if people genuinely enjoyed the game and wanted to see more, they would support you. I deleted it from my inventory so fast before I was able to 100% and as an achievement hunter, I never do that

I don't usually write reviews, but something about this game specifically compelled me. It is a strange little game, and the whole thing felt quite surreal to play. I knew nothing about this game going in other than the Steam page itself. I am a big fan of niche games, indie games, pixel art, and horror; this game happens to hit every box. It is a beautiful game. The artwork and the character designs are gorgeous and fascinating. Every scene, every background, every character model is engrossing (and just regular gross, but in a good way). There aren't many rooms, there's only three(ish) characters you get to see, and there's just a handful of cutscenes, but this game maximizes them all to make the most out of them. It's all quite visceral. The story itself - which I will not spoil - is relatively straightforward with simple to understand themes, but it lends itself to various interpretations that give it further depth. It leaves many unanswered questions, but I don't mean that in critique.
