It is an emotional game. I did find my self getting frustrated at points being like "why are you doing that!" but thats because i got invested in the story and you never truly know what someone is going through until you walk into their shoes. Felt myself connect on a personal level in some aspects and it was a very simple game. Congrats by the way on your first game.3 found this helpful
There is sincerity and vulnerability in the story being told in this game, but it is similar to hearing someone describe a dream that they once had. Given that the player has nothing to do, sitting there and just listening to him drone on and on became a bit unpleasant. While I fully understand that this is a deeply personal account from the creator, I need something more from my narrative adventure games aside from what this game is offering. It is a bit ironic that, at one point, the narrator talks about his preference in video games as a child skewing more into the fantastical, the cartoony, as he had no interest in playing games that felt too grounded in reality. What are we doing in this game? Walking around the same small environment, looking for bubbles that will unlock the next segment of the audio log. I want developers to be able to create games that tell personal stories like this. I really do. But when you give the player almost literally nothing to do it just feels like you want to trap someone into listening to you talk about your childhood. The player is not a person in this story. If this game had somehow positioned the player as the narrator or as any kind of cha…2 found this helpful
The Memories That Shape Us, created by Derek Larson and published by D Rock Games LLC, is a reflective, narrative-driven experience that places storytelling above all else, presenting a quiet and introspective journey through the stages of a single life. Rather than relying on traditional gameplay systems, it invites players to explore environments that represent different periods of personal growth, using memory as both its structure and its central theme. From the beginning, it establishes a contemplative tone, encouraging players to slow down and engage with the story at a more thoughtful pace. The experience is built around simple exploration, with players moving through a series of locations that symbolize key moments in the protagonist’s life. These environments are filled with interactive elements that trigger fragments of memory, gradually revealing a narrative that spans childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each discovery contributes to a larger picture, creating a sense of progression that feels less like completing objectives and more like piecing together a personal history. The lack of traditional gameplay mechanics allows the narrative to take full focus, making ea…1 found this helpful
this game is quite beautiful. its the culmination of his whole life laid bare and honest in a narrative experience. the reality of the story is part of what makes it so interesting. theres a few bits of neat environmental storytelling too. the game is not without flaw, of course: the graphics leave a lot to be desired, i had wierd performance issues the first time i ran it, it could probably be a bit shorter, and the gameplay... theres not really much. it consists of walking around the same few areas over and over to collect pieces and drive the story forward, which is really tedious between story segments and detracts away from how compelling the story could be. almost more of a chore to get to the next part. however... despite that... its still impressive. not only is this a brave, vulnerable and personal story, but its a project that he saw through to the end.1 found this helpful
I respect that it took a lot of vulnerability to make this game. The memories discussed and the overall dialogue are well done. My issue stems from the gameplay aspect. We're tasked to find bubbles of memories in a stagnant environment. On one hand that might be intentional- the lifelessness of the atmosphere. If so then I'm not the target audience. I don't mind a meandering walking simulator. I don't mind minimal gameplay. I mind lifeless worlds and environments because it becomes a test of endurance to get to more story. I don't think this game is bad. I think it's just not for me. If you are like me and prefer interactable environments with a living world then you will likely not enjoy this experience. If you're looking for a heartfelt story with relatable emotional themes and don't care about that other stuff then I do recommend playing this.1 found this helpful
It's a highly emotional game about the struggles and memories of one persons life. Graphically there is a lot to be desired, but as this is not the main focus of the game, I can easily forgive this. If you have two hours for an emotional rollercoaster and a personal and true life story, get this!1 found this helpful
