About Never Second in Rome

Never Second in Rome is a turn-based historical game with RPG and management elements. You take the role of a Roman centurion in the army of Julius Caesar.
In a Republic dominating the Mediterranean World and yet shaken by internal strife, still traumatized by the horrors of the civil war that marked the previous generation, the arrival of a new governor in your province will initiate a succession of events that will ultimately define the future of Rome and its empire.
Starting right before the beginning of the Gallic War, you will assume command of a century in a newly raised legion.

Key features

  • In addition to the main character, you will control the small army unit in your charge, your century.
  • Train yourself and your century, appoint your staff and discover the most remarkable individuals at your service.
  • Fight and lead your legionaries in real historical battles relying on a complex system of intertwined stats.
  • Turn-based individual combat involving not only your main character, but also the soldiers under your command.
  • Text-based events and narrative sections with many Attribute and Skill checks.
  • Great care and attention to historical detail and accuracy.

Free demo available

You can download and play the free demo directly on Steam. It allows you to explore the first three chapters of the game at your own pace. I recommend trying it before you buy, it's the best way to find out whether this game is up your alley.

Until the fatigue system is made to be less oppressive on the centurion, this is unfun to play. IT's fun to manage the Century and engage in all sorts of roleplay shenanigans, but all this fun is instantly murdered when you have a long combat sequence and your centurion is just. Forced to suffer because you can't even avoid fighting, otherwise you're branded a traitor, so by the middle of that combat sequence you're twice as tired as any of your legionaries. This is bs, at least give player character some fatigue regen when they're in the back of the fighting lines.

The gameplay loop we had in the first game where you died and then retried while being slightly better is gone. The campaign is a lot longer and has considerably less RNG. The decisions you make while choosing what to train follow you for a long time. I ended up not liking the cohort combat. As you get deeper into the game, there are battles that feel like they drag on for way too long and that barely anything is happening, and that nothing you do makes any difference. In a battle where you have to destroy an army of 2400 cohesion, it is disheartening to only do 10 damage per turn. Some of the individual fights feel the same, where the enemy turtles into a defensive position over and over again, basically wasting your time until cohort combat begins again for more not much of anything. The aspects that make me recommend this game are the historical ones. I greatly enjoyed the setting of this game and being a centurion makes a lot more sense to keep you closer to some very important historical figures you will meet. I look forward to the dev's next project.

A dissapointing followup, half baked repetetive systems broken up by very long history lore dumps.

Good game, significantly easier if you played the previous game and understand the fatigue mechanic

Very entertaining game. A great improvement on it's predecesor in the ability to save and retry with the same character. Two fun and engaging combat systems, and a good and engaging story which is historically accurate. The training systems are good and give many things to consider. The only downside is that the music cuts out during the story segments, which leaves them far less engaging. Strongly recommend for those intrested in history who don't mind reading a bit. Both of this developers games are plenty of fun and give good value for your money.
