What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Who Summoned It? is praised for its charming writing, distinctive characters, and clever mystery design that successfully blends detective deduction with point-and-click exploration. However, players note the relatively short playtime of around 6 hours and some frustration with difficulty spikes and lack of guidance, though accessibility issues with tiny, unadjustable text have been a concern for some players despite developer acknowledgment of the problem.
An entertaining and surprisingly tricky little mystery game
Don't let the small number of reviews fool you: this game is a gem. I played this off of a recommendation from the Golden Idol Discord server, and I'm so glad I did. I've tried many deduction/detective games, and this one scratched that Golden Idol itch that most games fail to touch. Who Summoned It? is a point-and-click game where you play as Riki Rocktoe, truthmeister extraordinaire. Gameplay is kinka like a point-and-click Duck Detective game: You explore the environment, talk to people, and solve fill-in-the-blank mysteries in your "scroll of truth." The mysteries start very simple, but get trickier as you progress. To answer the titular question, you'll definitely need to think for a bit and revisit evidence in order put all of the pieces together. This is not an easy type of puzzle to craft, and this game does it better than most. Expect lots of schemes, deception, and use of supernatural mechanics. The game is dialogue-heavy, as there are nearly 20 different characters and you can ask them all about every other character. This type of game needs compelling storytelling and writing. Vibey music and great storytelling! Solid puzzle game!3 found this helpful
I enjoyed this game quite a bit! The strongest bit was the comedic dialogue. It was always fun meeting a new character, then running down their dialogue trees to see all the funny stuff they had to say. The light-hearted humor prevents the fact that there are 20-ish characters to interrogate from feeling like a slog. In particular, Riki Rocktoe, the main character, is a delight and such a cute little ogre(?) child(?). There are a lot of mysteries in the game, many of them intertwining and interfering with each other, leading to a satisfyingly dense story to untangle. It does get rather difficult towards the end, and I did feel that the game was not necessarily paced the best. Towards the end, there were a lot of mysteries that I solved all at once, and before that, there's a large amount of just talking to people. Part of this is a consequence of how I play games, but I wish I had had an experience where things were more evenly spaced out, especially since it would help me keep the facts in my head better if they weren't given to me all at once. One note: I played this on the Steam Deck, and I got a bug fairly often when I did the Golden Idol-esque solves that crashed my game. Us…2 found this helpful
I liked the story and the mystery. The only thing I don't like about this game is that it could benefit from some QoL improvements. A lot of the information has to be kept in your head, including meta-information, like who do I have to talk to to get the required information about something. At the start it was fine, but by the end of the game I was a little overwhelmed. It's probably fine if you do the whole game in one sitting, but spread across multiple days it becomes less manageable. Another thing that is worth mentioning is that when you finish the game it would seem you can no longer go back to the state before you finished, so if you want to read all the dialogue one last time do it before filling in the final statement. Still I would definitely recommend this game. Looking forward to more from the devs1 found this helpful
Short, but well written and fun to play. Easily worth the low cost of entry.
Funny, fairytale point and click adventure game that more people should know about! You play as the cutest detective ever to uncover who summoned a monster to kill the king! Pros: -Lovely and cute if some backgrounds are a bit browser gamey (Nice, funny, cute character designs - Riki Rocktoe especially, shifting stills make no animation conversations more dynamic, idle animations outside of conversations are nice -Strange, unique take on fairytale music (Very calming and cool - something nice to focus on while doing detective work) -Riki is kind of a unique point and click adventure protagonist (He has some bumbling similarities but he's cuter and more sympathetic to jerkier ones like Guybrush Threepwood and Rufus from Deponia) -Well written, funny, nice method of doing the deed in the Booglo (Most of the humour comes from Riki's cute reactions) -Lovely method for deduction and moving the story forward in the form of the Scroll of Truth (The other magical items give nice mechanics too - see back in time, rifle through pockets etc.) -Detective story that makes you think (At least you need to remember stuff to make headway and employ some deduction and educated…
