Ratcheteer DX is a colorful adventure where you wake as a young mechanic in underground caverns and must journey through frozen wastelands to rescue your cryo-sleeping colony by mastering eight unique tools that unlock new paths and abilities. The Water Treatment Plant seems to be too. The Cryo Colony is in danger! What begins as a simple trip to fetch your mentor’s wrench sets off a winding journey through the caverns below to a vast Snowcean above to rescue friends, foes, and strangers alike.Along the way, you'll find and master eight unassuming tools, each opening new paths for exploration. Starting with just the Crank Lantern to light your first steps into the dark and the Wrench Sword to swing at what you find lurking in it, you'll be bounding, drilling, gliding, stomping, and dashing your way across the world of the Ratcheteer by the time you reach the end.Originally released for the black-and-white Playdate, this updated version reimagines the game in full color with a CD-quality stereo soundtrack and support for 10 languages.

✦ AI summary

Ratcheteer DX is a short, charming Legend of Zelda-inspired adventure with tight controls, compelling atmosphere, beautiful visuals, and an excellent soundtrack that delivers a concise and engaging experience without unnecessary grind. While most players praise the game's design and sense of polish, some find the platforming frustrating, and the lack of sound options can be jarring. Players feel the game is worth buying, particularly for those who enjoy Zelda-style games and don't mind a shorter playtime.

This is a shot (very short) LADX clone with tight controls, good story and atmosphere, and fun bosses. The 'darkness' mechanic can be a little annoying at first but the game is very fair about letting you see what you need to see and it doesn't detract from the experience at all. Overall worth the price of admission.

Short and sweet. Relatively easy, which I appreciated because I'm bad at games like these.

It's a short and neat adventure game. Positives: - The game just really knows what it wants to be and what it doesn't. You get great music, great art style, exploration, a bit of combat, some dungeons and their items, and some hidden chests. Everything is very doable. It's sort of the opposite of overwhelming, but without being boring. The progression is very fast and the added items (mostly movement options) open up a lot of paths quickly. Even though the game is only like 3-5 hours, it doesn't even feel like you're rushing though it. It's just very on-point 2D Zelda gameplay. Neutral: - I don't know if the darkness + lantern added anything to the game. It sure is something different, but it is rarely used as a mechanic. I think only by one enemy. Same with the alien language. It just sort of solved itself because I collected most chests that I encountered. Negatives: - A few parts of the game are badly designed. Of the 3 hours I probably spent 15 minutes just backtracking because I jumped in a well, couldn't go back, and it spat me out on the other side of the map (twice). Another 15 minutes because I couldn't figure out the sea puzzle.

A very simple and charming little game. If you like retro action-adventure games (especially the 2D Zelda titles) then you'll probably vibe with this one. Nice chiptune soundtrack as well. Controls can be a little janky sometimes but it's pretty forgiving and never felt particularly hard. It's also pretty short, which can be a positive or a negative depending on who you ask. I for one like these kinds of bite-sized games and will probably come back to this one again in the future.

I really enjoyed the Ratcheteer! I'm a big fan of the Legend of Zelda series and the Ratcheteer scratches that same itch, although it's not nearly as long as any Zelda game. However, it doesn't necessarily feel short, rather concise and free from grind. It's a compelling setting, lovely visuals, and the music is absolutely amazing!

Short, sweet, and well done little game, with enough variety and puzzles to keep you engaged for several hours.. Only con is there are no sound options, so be prepared to have your ears blasted off.
