About Chasm

✦ AI summary

You're a knight investigating a cursed mining town and the disappearance of its people, battling supernatural creatures through hand-crafted rooms that assemble into a unique procedurally-generated world map just for you. Chasm blends challenging retro action-adventure combat with the promise that no two playthroughs are ever the same, all wrapped in gorgeous pixel art and packed with boss battles, ability unlocks, and loot to discover.

Welcome to Chasm, an action-adventure game in which you play a new recruit undertaking your first mission for the Guildean Kingdom. Thrilled to prove your worth as a knight, you track strange rumors that a mine vital to the Kingdom has been shut down. But what you discover in the mining town is worse than you imagined: The townspeople have disappeared, kidnapped by supernatural creatures emerging from the depths.

Honor-bound to solve the mystery and restore peace to the Kingdom, you embark upon an epic adventure, with deadly battles against cunning monsters, exploration of ancient catacombs and castles, and powerful new equipment hidden at every turn. Though the overall story is the same for all players, your hero's journey will be unique: each of the rooms has been hand-designed, and behind the scenes Chasm stitches these rooms together into a one-of-a-kind world map that will be your own.

Its a fine Metroidvania. Bit of story sprinkled in. Not much as far as mechanics or new abilities its mostly just ... like its normal? They said 'thanks for playing' at the end. That's pretty nice. Thanks for making it, developers, I had a nice time. Probably like a solid 7/10? Its good. I liked the Quake 1 reference at the end.

I feel like this game is a solid 6/10. The mechanics are things you've probably seen in other games before, so it doesn't do much to stand out in that regard. That said, the game has some really nice art, the music is solid throughout, and the overall presentation is enjoyable. It's also a fairly short experience, which helps keep things moving without overstaying its welcome. I'm not a big fan of the movement animation stuns, especially in a Metroidvania-style game where fluid movement is such a big part of the experience. At times it made traversal feel a little less responsive than I would have liked. Still, despite a few frustrations, I had a good time with it overall and don't regret playing it.

Fantastic metroidvania, my only note is that the double jump should have been available much, much sooner...
