WEGO World War II: Overlord

I've played it enough already having put 30+ hours into Stalingrad to say this game is excellent. The improvements from the last game make this one even more enjoyable. I highly recommend to anyone interested in the WEGO format and fans of wargaming in general. It is not as intimidating as it looks, everything makes sense. Great in game keyboard layout reminders too.

I've been playing Overlord for the past 6 months prior to Steam's release and have really enjoyed it. There is much to this game but with all the in-game help you can dive right in. The fidelity of the maps really add a lot and the extreme zoom levels are great for playing at higher resolutions. I'm into logistics and the way you can modify supply for units based on their orders is pretty sweet. Everything you need to know about a unit and then some is available with just a click. Same with terrain. When planning for attacks there is a lot of data presented for you to consider and combat results are pretty detailed. The game can really be as deep as you want it to be. There is breakdown/combining of units, lines of communication, realistic OOBs, weather impact, air and naval support. Obviously, the best part is watching how it all plays out WEGO style after carefully planning all your moves. I've found the AI to be a formidable opponent as well. There are just so many cool things about this game that I highly recommend it to all wargaming afficionados.

WEGO Overlord is fun, offers excellent scenarios, and well worth the time to learn the UI. For me a good game is about decisions, and less about the UI. The UI in the WEGO series is layered but the more you play the quicker it becomes almost seamless, leaving you decide on strategy and decisions by which you will win or lose. Having played WEGO Stalingrad the system has been adapted to Overlord in all the right ways. Amazing the game could so easily incorporate a naval invasion without bogging down game mechanics. Hats off to the developers for that. And if you love all the special forces involved in Overlord, they are incorporated into the game. Which adds a lot of variety and opportunities to experience the best way to put them to good use. No regrets buying the game. Looking forward to many fun hours playing. I hope The Battle of the Bulge is their next game, nudge nudge, wink wink.

Although I have played many many WW2 hex based games I found this one to be very confusing. I tried using the mouse to do things (like you normally would), but it was not at all clear what I was doing. What commands I was really given, then why what happened afterwards was just as much a mystery. It shouldn't be hard for an experienced wargaming like myself to pick up a new game like this. But my past experiences were of not help in this game. I think the interface commands are confusing. The various displayed information is not clear. Simply hovering over units should clearly show everything you need to know. Giving unit commands should be easy and straight forward with clear feedback. Not really sure if the gameplay is any good as I could not suffer through the UI.
