The Dead Thread

Looks okay. Runs okay. I say try the demo and see if it's for you. But, after about an hour, I realized that it wasn't for me. I used to love this game but finding so many keys and backtracking so much in the first hour just became annoying. It's a throwback to the 90's style of Survival Horror, I guess. But this game doesn't really do anything compelling in my short amount of playtime. It felt like it was doing everything to keep me running back and forth until I reached the two hour mark. With no voice acting during the cutscenes, and the annoying clothing crafting mechanic, I think I've had enough. Especially at this price point. Maybe I'll buy it again when it drops to a reasonable price.

This game was much better than I expected and I had a lot of fun with it personally. I beat the game once and will be playing again to get thru the extra game modes and to try the hardest difficulty. Experiencing The Dead Thread is like playing thru a B movie. If you can lean into its corniness, its budget constraints, weather a few camera jolts after button mashing grab escapes, and forgive some jank here and there: you should be right at home. All of that might be a big ask for the current price tag ($30 at time of review) The fan service isn’t needed imo. I understand its appeal but it’s a little over the top. Customization is fine, and I get the “thread” aspect, as an in-game protective mechanism, but I would have preferred a badass female lead who finds gear and upgrades along the way: maybe clothing that makes more sense in a zombie outbreak? Not mini skirts and heels. Clothing becomes shredded and can disappear completely with enough damage. It’s fine I guess… it just makes it harder to take the game seriously. The game is much more complete than expected. There are a few systems that could use a new implementation but its mostly solid. I rarely see games through to the end, even the big triple A games, but I will be completing this one... maybe not all the achievements though, but each mode will get a good once through at least.... Ok, the last boss fight of the main story is... pretty bad. Still a recommend but that part needs a lot of work.

It's a good Resident Evil-Like with a lot of exploration, good level design and many items to find to unlock new passages which means many double back but it's the kind of game that requires that. Among the kind of stuff that doesn't work so well there is the lack of flashlight, the normal difficulty being too easy, the lack diversity among the foes and the impossibility of skipping the cutscenes (By the way I don't see the point of forcing the player to watch the cutscenes when the story is so simple). So it's quite good for an indie game, hope that they work on a sequel/new game with fewer issues.

This is really good, the gameplay emulates the RE2 Remake pretty closely and it was easy to get immersed and enjoy the gameplay loop because of that. The game is clearly made by someone who understands what makes Resident Evil fun. Great open ended, interconnected map. Great zombie animations and hitreg, stuff like that. Could have had a few more puzzles. But then there is the fact that this game does the thing where they put weird wonky scripted animation sequences in there. Which completely rips you out of that aforementioned immersion. Because there is such a massive juxtaposition between the smooth free roam gameplay and then the janky B grab animations, button mashing and cutscenes. This applies to the bosses too, the boss encounters kinda stink, especially the one on the [spoiler] roof [/spoiler]. If they had just chosen to not have any sort of button mashing grab crap then this would have been so much better. That's my advice as an avid indie Resident evil-like enjoyer. DO NOT put scripted chase sequences, zombie grabs and button mash gameplay if you can't make it match the feel of the otherwise awesome gameplay.
