Tail of the Sun is a bizarre and unique survival exploration game that players find genuinely captivating despite its deliberately obtuse design. The appeal lies in its mysterious loop of wandering a primal world, eating random items to grow stronger, and deciding when to engage dangerous creatures like the dreaded mammoth—a dynamic that creates both relaxation and tension. While the game's obscured mechanics and lack of hand-holding frustrate some, most players embrace this intentional obscurity as part of what makes the experience unforgettable and distinct from modern games.
This is a unique experience. If you know anything about Aquanaut's Holiday, then you know the fun of exploring a vast, largely barren world to occasionally encounter an intentionally placed, strange object with no concrete 'game value.' Tail of the Sun takes that concept and folds in combat, where you are forced to gauge "am I able to win this fight? Can I cheese it? Do I need to just flee?" The ultimate quarry and driver of purpose is the mammoth, who will just obliterate you on first encounter. This combat dynamic is coupled with general intangible stat growth behind obfuscated values, influenced by picking up and eating the plethora of random items strewn about. This loop is literally running on the same emotional engine as Souls games ("Do I fight or skip or cheese?"->grow in power->return later if you can find your way again), and does it very well. Wild music cues you as to finding some new area, and the lack of a map and the constrained camera make any grasp you gain of the terrain one that feels very significant. Never expected to see this one get re-released all these years later. One of the most bizarre and unique PS1 games of it's time. It's relaxing and stressful somehow, with a great soundtrack and the freedom to go about things however you want. Would really like to see No One Can Stop Mr. Domino on Steam as well one day.9 found this helpful
