I have a huge soft spot for these surreal pixelated walking sims, and this one in particular managed to evoke such a vivid sense of anemoia akin to how it felt to watch cartoons as a kid while yearning to live in fiction. I can't express how much I adore this game's visual design, I wanted to keep exploring even after seeing everything the map has to offer. Gameplay-wise I found the tasks quite fun and satisfying, and only despised a certain confusing section towards the end. Also the ambience was so lighthearted and peaceful that I kept forgetting that the story is supposed to be suspenseful mystery lol. This concept has so much potential for becoming a bigger game (alone all the details in the graphics, as well as all the ideas introduced by the lore snippets), I'd love if there was an actual casual simulator in this exact setting, the base could get beautifully expanded. Overall it's a very pleasant vibrant experience which especially stands out with its visuals and setting!

[h1]Overview:[/h1] '[i]-256[/i]' is a first person walking simulator where you play a mysterious and very sketchy looking game tied behind a ghost story. The game within the game has you play as a staff bot of a hotel for someone, exploring an abstract hotel doing various oddjobs and other mundane tasks for seemingly no reason or purpose. You're an unnamed individual and the game really doesn't do much to try and present a linear plot but with that being said, it actually isn't too bad. It is relatively short and even with exploring every nook and cranny in the game, I still managed to only squeeze about an hour and a half out of the game and that's including a few fumbles here and there. [h1]Gameplay:[/h1] First and foremost, '[i]-256[/i]' is a walking simulator. Meaning majority of the time, you're walking around (mostly back and forth between rooms) in the hotel finding things to do whether it's serving food, cleaning a mess, assisting with a task someone else is doing or just talking to the patrons there. -256 is an interesting little mystery, but the actual gameplay is extremely limited. Most of the experience consists of walking around the hotel, completing simple tasks and looking for things to interact with, with the strange atmosphere doing most of the heavy lifting. The pixel-art presentation and sound design are decent, but there isn't much depth or meaningful gameplay beyond exploration. The 8 Steam achievements are a nice addition, at least, although once you've found the secrets and finished the short experience, there isn't much reason to return.
