2D Platformer GAME (Toy Factory)

For a seven-stage platformer, 2D Platformer GAME (Toy Factory) is surprisingly barebones on Steam. There are no Steam achievements or Trading Cards, despite plenty of obvious milestones such as completing each stage, reaching the ending and overcoming the various platforming challenges. The game is also very short, with most players finishing it in under an hour, and the camera and collision detection can occasionally be awkward. The hand-drawn style and heartwarming story are nice, but there simply isn't much gameplay or Steam progression here to make it memorable.

2D Platformer GAME (Toy Factory) is a surprisingly touching little platformer, especially considering how simple it looks at first. I play as a defective doll carrying the soul of a mother who died in an accident, and my goal is to make it safely back to her daughter. I liked the contrast between the cute hand drawn presentation and the much more emotional story underneath it. The gameplay is straightforward side scrolling platforming. I move through a series of compact stages while avoiding obstacles and trying to reach the end safely. The mechanics are not especially complicated, but I enjoyed the simplicity because it keeps the focus on the journey rather than burying the story underneath a huge collection of systems. The mysterious toy factory setting also gives the game a lot of personality. There is something slightly unsettling about controlling a defective doll that contains a human soul, especially when the world around me looks cute and playful. I liked that strange contrast because it makes the experience feel more distinctive than a normal platformer. The hand drawn artwork is probably my favorite part.
