Players largely criticize ALPAGES for poor game design fundamentals, including clunky controls, confusing level layouts without objective markers, unfair enemy spawning, and shooting mechanics that feel unrewarding rather than tense. A few players appreciate the minimalist survival concept and have found enjoyment speedrunning it with friends, but these positive sentiments are vastly outweighed by complaints about the game feeling unfinished, frustrating, and pointless to engage with.
ALPAGES : THE FIVE BOOKS is a stripped-down survival horror shooter that feels less like a fully polished release and more like a raw, experimental concept brought to life. Developed by Nicolas Bernard and published by M.INDIE, it embraces a minimalist design philosophy where the focus is placed almost entirely on immediate tension and escalating difficulty. There’s very little in the way of narrative framing or world-building; instead, the game throws players directly into a hostile environment and challenges them to endure. The central objective is simple but effective: locate and collect five scattered books while surviving increasingly aggressive waves of enemies. Each book acts as a trigger that intensifies the experience, introducing new threats and compounding the pressure on the player. This creates a clear sense of progression, even if it’s a linear one, as each step forward comes with a noticeable increase in danger. By the time all five books are gathered, the situation becomes chaotic, culminating in a final confrontation that serves as the game’s ultimate test of survival. The structure is easy to grasp, making it accessible from the start, but it also reveals most of…1 found this helpful
Can only agree with the other negative comments. The game is a total cluster f***, it is not possible to play more than a few minutes. Not recommended. AVOID. It is one of the rare video games where shooting at things feels boring af. Imagine trying to find anything in a massive map with no objective pointers whatsoever. Also it is has infinite enemy spawning, sluggish and non-responsive movement controls, enemies that seem to hit you no matter what and a horde mode design where actually trying to fight anything will only get you killed. If your last objective is in the fence maze, just give up - you are never coming out of there alive. It has the level of game design a five-year-old would come up. For the record, I did find 4/5 books, though finding the first one took like 30 minutes. They seem to be mostly on the edges of map (most locations have either an extra life or a book, usually an extra life) and the last two are probably in the central area of the map. One of the central locations is the fence maze... Eeh.
awesome. had a blast on discord comedy night. we all have world record speed runs. wish the devs weren't dead though
cool idea ass product
