Aonatsu Line

[h3]Enjoyment: 8/10[/h3] Aonatsu Line is an innocent slice of life visual novel about summer vacation, and it nails that specific bittersweet feeling of a summer that you know has to end. The story follows Tatsumi and his childhood friend, along with a new transfer student and a lonely kouhai. The narrative is really heartwarming with a genuine take on young love. The UI is very clean too. I'll keep my review brief so as to avoid any spoilers. The pacing is pretty good. The common route is light and fun with the whole group, then it gets a lot more personal once you're into one of the heroine routes. Every heroine gets her time and it's handled well, but Miki's route was my favorite by far. I liked that it never forces melodrama and just keep things grounded. Interestingly, I just found out that Aonatsu Line won the Scenario Award for the Moe Game Awards 2019, not that it really means anything to me personally. There's no English support as of this review however. Unless you can read Chinese, you'll have to rely on screen capture translation tools to get through it. The game lives up to its name, it's pretty good.

This visual novel uses the Unity Engine, and it seems like it's not as efficient as NeXAS in terms of system resource usage. There are also some bugs that are tricky to detect. For example, when I read the episode where Tatsumi, Miki, and Chihiro arrive home after a party and Miki receives a phone call from Chihiro, the visual novel suddenly changed colors and started flashing. The screen appeared to be the color of fountain pen ink, and all three characters' stand-ups appeared simultaneously. I was reading this visual novel late at night, and it really gave me a fright. Once I'd calmed down, I also had to press Ctrl to skip the episode. I was reading this visual novel on a low-end PC, and this problem occurred. When I switched to my high-end PC that I use exclusively for gaming, it didn't happen. Some people might say that it's not a good idea to read this visual novel on a low-end computer. I think so. But I would still say that compared to the NeXAS Engine, this Unity Engine really isn't very good for visual novels, at least not for the developers of HIKARI FIELD.
