Arkham Nightmares, developed and published by Tim Rachor, is an indie adventure experience that attempts to merge psychological horror, light roguelike elements, and narrative-driven exploration within a Lovecraft-inspired setting. Taking place in a shadowy sanatorium in Arkham, the game places you in the role of Professor Liebwerk, a doctor tasked with understanding the troubled minds of his patients. The premise is intriguing, built around themes of madness, fragmented memory, and the thin line between reality and nightmare, but the execution often feels uneven compared to its ambitions. The gameplay is divided between daytime and nighttime phases, each serving a different purpose. During the day, players interact with patients, exploring their stories through dialogue and attempting to gain their trust. These interactions are meant to shape how events unfold, giving the impression of a branching narrative where choices matter. In practice, however, these systems feel somewhat limited. While there are moments where decisions influence outcomes, the overall depth of interaction is relatively shallow, and conversations don’t always carry the weight the concept suggests. Can’t stop coming back.
Almost perfect, but still feels incomplete
I really wanted this game to be good, but unfortunately it wasn't. The voice acting and the music were pretty good for a free game, but the story is kind of messy and the gameplay is horrid. You literally go around picking things up and gifting them to random people to gain their trust. After which, I don't know what happens because I never did gain their trust. You can also talk to these people and gain some sort of lore, but most of the time it doesn't add anything to the already lacking story, and doesn't give you any indications on how to progress. I ended up picking up a Wine Encyclopedia that I tried gifting to at least 5 different people, all of which the game said I needed to give the book to someone else, but it didn't tell me how or where to find said person, so I was effectively stuck walking clueless around the map trying to figure out what to do. The look of the game was also quite weird. It reminded me of a PC game from the 90s, coupled with a detective game that you would find on mobile or on the Nintendo DS. Overall, I didn't really like this game. Not recommended.
Great level design
