Astroe

Astroe was an attempt at making a PvP only ripoff of Asteroids (the arcade game from 1980). Gameplay consisted of 2D top down Asteroids style gameplay, but the developers added a simple progression element as well as mining. There were two game modes, a team based "satellite capture" mode and a deathmatch mode. It failed. SteamDB shows the game peaked at a laughably low 4 concurrent players, a pitiful number, and now the game has practically no players, with only one player logging on every month or so. It went so badly the developer made the game free, and even then, people didn't want it. Why did it fail? It's video game autopsy time! First up the game visuals are terrible, resolution and controls are locked so there's no user agency in trying to customise the mediocre interface, the overall quality here is poor, but at least some attempt was made at graphics... 2D retro pixel "art" wasn't used. Regardless, PvP gamers have literally thousands of games to choose from, hundreds of AAA games that are either free or cost next to nothing.
