Banned Tapes is a horror game that says, “less is more” can horrifying. The basic premise of the game is, you possession a bunch of VHS tapes, and you have to watch them to determine if something terrifying occurs. The tapes have content that are crazy enough that they would have been banned anywhere. Quite horrifying. Such as horror, jump scares, and even some supersaturate stuff where people scare themselves. Sometimes, the horror is just creepy enough that you either drop the game or continue on, wanting to figure out what happens. When you think you are finished, there are more content. In the end, it is crazy. What this game’s strength lies is the mystery, and dash of nostalgia. The tapes seemingly are in VHS format, and require a format that is largely extinct in the modern era. It does touch upon nostalgia for an odler era. Honestly, that is pretty much all the good stuff in the game. With that in mind, are there any downsides to the game? Yes there are. There are no save points in the game, so when you play the game, you’ll have to play in one whole session. If you want to come back to the game and resume at a later date, you’ll have to start from the beginning. …4 found this helpful
an excellent concept. i like that the devs acknowledge up front their inspirations; lets you kinda 'let go' of any comparisons and appreciate the work as it stands. very unnerving experience, excellent with friends (i did it on stream) but probably even better alone in the dark. for me it captured that 'looking up creepy videos i shouldn't be looking up' feeling from my teenage years. hope to see more from this dev in the future !! a few of the scares are a little cheesy, and some are much better. the liminal videos and the interwoven, confusing narrative pieces all add a lot to the experience. definitely worth a try. it's not a very long game, but don't be cheap !! support indie devs - they're all we've got.3 found this helpful
A short but very interesting horror game. The basic premise is that you bought a load of old VHS tapes at a yard sale, and now you're going through them to identify if they contain anything spooky. You basically watch each one, then give a yes or no answer as to whether you think it contained anything creepy, paranormal, frightening, etc. And as you do, a story gradually unfolds in the background as your player character becomes increasingly obsessed with the tapes and a supernatural force starts to take hold of you. Overall, a decent horror game with suitable visuals and sound design! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk5b4WtL2xw1 found this helpful
eww
4/10 I would recommend getting this one on sale. The basic idea of the game is you find blank VHS tapes at a garage sale, view them one by one looking for images of death, gore, shock, paranormal activity, and scary scenes. You put the best of the clips together to create a ultimate compilation horror video. Not much of a game, you spend most of the time clicking through short scenes of each VHS tape. Report them if they are disturbing, there are a couple of jump scares and suspenseful scenes. Some of them are surprising, but nothing too scary. There is depictions of pixel gore in a few. There is not options to change the sensitivity, so the part where you collect VHS tapes is a little rough. The game did crash once after the first 10 minutes of me playing while trying to watch the second set of VHS tapes. I like the scene where you are walking with the night vision camera. I like the look of the game. Overall I liked the idea of the game but found it a little boring.
very awesome game. A great way to mix horror, walking simulator and point and click. Hopefully we get Banned Tapes 2. Big Thumbs up from me. Cheers! https://youtu.be/Z3wc1C_-7GQ?si=vwMQLMYrSpQF9llT
