Command German or Allied forces during the pivotal nine-day Battle of the Bastogne bulge in this hex-and-counter wargame where you manage regiments and battalions across a tactical map while playing cards for dramatic historical events like bridge demolitions and weather changes. Choose between hot-seat multiplayer, AI opponents at multiple difficulty levels, and three scenarios ranging from introductory tutorials to the full historic breakout attempt.
The allies's General Eisenhower immediatly ordered the one Hunderd and First Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles, to collect all their men on leave in Paris. They were to load unto trucks and driven to the vital crossroads of Bastogne. He also ordered General Patton to turn his third Army due north to cut into the German thrust.
Bastogne became the focus for the success of the German's attempt.
Bastogne Breakout is a Hex, Counter and Card game of the crucial 9 days, Dec 16th till 25th, when the battle raged. Units are regiments and battalions. Each hex is a mile or 1.6 Km across. All the units are included.
Players can play both sides, called Hot Seat or play the Germans against the Allied AI. Players can also choose difficulty levels. Cards are chosen at the start to Blow bridges, have Otto Skorzeny cut demolition wires, cause Fritz Bayelien to fall in love and pray for good weather among other things.
There are 3 Scenarios:
1. Bastogne Breakout - An introductory scenario to introduce concepts of the game. In this release
2. 2nd Panzer Goes West - The Second Panzer Divsion must be exitted of the Western edge of the board under a strict timetable.
3. Bastogne Breakout - Both the Second Panzer and Panzer Lehr must exit.

This is a really well designed traditional turn-based war game, in the spirit of Avalon Hill etc. Well worth the price and fun to play, with a solid AI and some very intelligent design features. I'm just learning to play, but I'm an experienced gamer within this niche, and I can see a lot of potential here. I hope we'll see Eastern Front DLCs and mod support; player created maps and OOBs. A linked campaign with the option for unit carry-over and experience gain would be very welcome and would probably draw more players in.15 found this helpful
Enough chrome to keep you engaged In the form of game mechanics but keeping It simple, and not overwhelming. Easy to play but without losing the sense of the old traditional wargames. I get crashes like the player below. No error message was given. Playing in compatibility mode and giving the operating system control of the screen settings did not stop the crash. The game itself is a good representation of a typical wargames of a bygone era. If the crashes are addressed I would recommend this game for any players familiar with old board wargames like Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz and Third Reich. The crash happened when the first allied reinforcements arrived.2 found this helpful
I play War in the East a lot and was looking for a casual war game with less depth. BB perfectly meets my requirements. The game features relevant decision making, such as artillery and supply allocation planning, besides the movement and battle planning. Hopefully there will be more content, such as a Italian campaign, in the future.1 found this helpful
